As a strange man living in Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata, the people I met have since discovered and downloaded Grindr, which I have given me enough data to write a paper and earn my doctorate in sociology. So, here I am sharing all my discoveries with you today. The characters you meet range from protein shakes’ gazling gym brothers to full-time trolls running toxic startups. Some want hookups, others want a partner, but most of them look like informal census officers who want to summarise your presence in the form of age, location, preferences, sexual position and place of residence. And while queer life in India is slowly moving forward, I don’t feel much at Grindr. Heart Stopper It’s like being in an episode Big Boss. So, even if you’re dodging a strange checklist or deciphering a message, there’s an overview of Grindr profiles that are guaranteed to check if you’re swiping in India with oddity.6.
“Drama from Explorer”9.
“Meet” machine10.
PS This list focuses on the types of profiles I personally encountered as an Indian strange cis man, but it is important to acknowledge that Grindr is not just CIS gay men. Many trans men, trans women, and non-binary people also use the app, each with their own experiences, challenges and joys. This work is purely for entertainment and satire, not to erase or look down on the diversity of identity that exists within Grindr’s strange community.12.
Finally, everyone deserves a better BIOS, fewer ghosts, fewer “SUP”. It’s a 3am message, so if you’re using Grindr, it’s better.
