FiveThe dolphin season usually lasts from August 21st to around September 21st. It’s the transition from summer to fall, and after the intense Leo energy of summer, it can feel like a bit of a blank slate. It’s time to stop playing and get back to work.
It’s also the time of year when kids go back to school. Virgo season encourages you to get things organized. If you’ve been on vacation or traveling, you may have chores piling up. By the middle of Virgo season, you’ll often find yourself with a mountain of to-do items.
Otome To my mother, to my grandmother
There are no pagan festivals during this period, except for the autumn equinox, which is on the border between Libra and Virgo. However, autumn suits Libra better than Virgo, since it comes first. So we will look at the autumn equinox during the Libra season. The sun literally “sets,” lowering in the sky and ushering in winter. Virgo is the last sign of the first half of the zodiac. It marks the midpoint of the astrological year.
Virgo is the transition from maiden to mother, or mother to crone. It is harvest time. Virgo is a mutable sign, so this season is about change and adapting to the new season that is coming. In Virgo, you can really feel the change of seasons. The air is clear and the scent of autumn is in the air.
Persephone, Goddess of Change
The Greeks worshipped Demeter as the goddess of agriculture and fertility, and her daughter Persephone was associated with the changing seasons and the cycle of life, death and rebirth. Persephone, also known as Kore in modern English, is also considered the goddess of vegetation. In Greek art, she is often depicted carrying sheaves of grain, resembling the virgin Virgo. This symbolism easily becomes part of the attributes of Ceres, and so Ceres and Persephone are both closely linked as aspects of the Triple Goddess. Persephone was primarily associated with the pomegranate, a fruit that she ate that bound her to the underworld.

Save and serve
The fruits are perfectly sweet and ripe, and it’s the last harvest of the year. I’m so full! It feels like I need to eat all the sweet stuff before winter hits. In Europe, Virgo season is when my aunts and uncles pick their tomatoes and bottle the salsa for the rest of the year. There’s also the grape harvest, so it’s a busy month from the end of August through October as we bottle the wine. Virgo is all about thinking ahead.
If you neglect the work of bottling and preserving summer fruits, your cupboards will be bare by December. Of course, there are supermarkets these days. But Virgo’s industrious, duty-driven energy endures. Virgo flowers are bright and small, like buttercups and daisies, not like Leo’s big-headed sunflowers from last season. Virgo is mutable earth. It is cold and dry, and ruled by Mercury. The coldness gives you a passive-aggression (the critic), and the dryness means you need a life of seclusion after serving others.
Get ready!
Virgo’s mutable nature means that while they blend in with other signs, they can also lose sight of themselves. Just like Virgo, the small and pretty buttercup blends in with its surroundings without causing any discomfort. It’s fun and light-hearted, but it is poisonous to animals. The buttercup is considered a noxious weed. Don’t go against a Virgo!
So don’t underestimate the power of the Moon during this transitional time. This is all about preparing for times of scarcity. Virgos save for rainy days, but we never know what the Universe will throw at us during this dark time in our evolution. So, as the Girl Guides used to say, “Be prepared!”
