Written by Barry Rosen

The Spring Equinox arrives this Thursday, March 20th, at 9:46 a.m. PDT. This is the moment when the sun crosses the celestial equator and spring officially begins in the Northern Hemisphere. And shortly thereafter, this Saturday, March 21st, Jupiter will form a precise trine to Mars. If you’ve been feeling heavy for the past few weeks, take a breath. There’s real light in the sky this week.

Equinox: a natural reset

Ancient cultures around the world understood something that modern life often forgets: seasonal changes are more than just meteorological. It’s a real energy reset. The Earth’s electromagnetic field changes at the equinoxes, and our own energy fields change with it. The moment when day and night are in perfect balance is always a time to pause, celebrate, and prepare, not overdo it.

Over the years I’ve noticed that this change often creates a surge of extra energy that can trick people into overdoing it. On the vernal equinox, there is a temptation to rush forward. The light is back, the days are getting longer, and everything in us wants to run with it. I’ve seen this pattern many times both myself and with my clients. That is, the Equinox’s burst of energy ends up in exhaustion and illness within a week because someone used it too quickly.

The prescription here is the same as the ancients knew. Meditate more, rest a little more, and celebrate. Let’s incorporate some music. Go to festivals and cultural events if possible. Let’s go outside and breathe the spring air. Let’s honor the transition, rather than just moving forward with it. This is a way to actually capture the energy of the equinox instead of wasting it.

For our friends in the Southern Hemisphere, Australia, South America and South Africa, this week marks the autumnal equinox and the beginning of the harvest season. The same principle applies vice versa. Slow down, collect what you have cultivated, and be grateful for the year’s abundance. The same thing is required in both hemispheres. It’s about stopping and respecting change.

We are also moving into eclipse season, with a full moon lunar eclipse occurring in early April. We’ll talk about that in another article, but know that the Spring Equinox begins a period of more energy. Therefore, this week you need to build a stable inner foundation. Remember your favorite mantra for this time of year, borrowed from Simon and Garfunkel. “Please slow down. You’re moving too fast. We need to make the morning last.” Happy spring.

Trine Jupiter and Mars: Saturday, March 21st

On Saturday, March 21st, Jupiter will form a precise trine to Mars. This is an aspect that truly deserves recognition.

I always describe Mars as a warrior and Jupiter as a guru. When they are in harmonious trine aspect, the warrior receives the blessings of the Guru. Mars’ natural drive and spontaneity are elevated to greater heights. Courage with wisdom, purposeful action, and energy that serves true ideals rather than ego. Through nearly 40 years of practice, I have consistently observed that Jupiter aspecting Mars elicits what I call a “brave outlook.” In short, people are more motivated to take action, take on meaningful challenges, and stand up for what’s right. In this aspect there is not only ambition, but also generosity.

Trine is the most fluid aspect. Energy moves easily between two planets. Jupiter’s blessings reach Mars without friction or resistance. This means that the initiative and drive you bring to the project this weekend will be truly supported, not in a reckless way, but in a way that builds towards lasting good.

Scorpio and Aries rising feel this most directly, as their aspect touches their ruler Mars. Capricorn, Libra, and Taurus rising tend to benefit greatly because they land as influences in the 3rd, 6th, or 11th house, and are good at profits, accomplishing tasks, and courageous actions. The rise of Pisces and Virgo will heighten some of the relationship dynamics, but Jupiter’s influence will provide the wisdom and perspective to navigate it.

The energy of the Equinox combined with the Jupiter-Mars trine makes this a great weekend to start doing things you’ve been hesitant to do, participate in acts of service or charity, have courageous conversations you’ve been putting off, and give yourself more physical energy and confidence than you’ve felt in recent weeks. Use it intentionally.

Practical remedies and actions this week

  • Meditate more than usual before and after the vernal equinox. Even just a few extra minutes can create a sense of stability through change.
  • Celebrating the seasons: music, dancing, good food, and time with friends and community.
  • Avoid overwork during the equinox transition period. Rest is a protection, not a luxury.
  • Jupiter-Mars trine leads to service: volunteering, donating, or helping someone who needs it.
  • Yoga, walking, anything that keeps you grounded and energized is a great way to help your body move.
  • Especially for Scorpios and Aries on the rise: Start doing something meaningful this weekend

This week, in the midst of a difficult spring, the planets are offering us a real gift. Receive it with gratitude, use it with wisdom, and try not to burn it all down with anxious activity. The spring will spread out neatly without any force.

Learn how to read transits in your own chart

Every planetary transit in the sky means something different depending on your rising sign, birth position, and the dasha period you are in. The same Jupiter-Mars trine that opens the door to Scorpio rising may ask rising Pisces to slow down and reflect. The difference is whether you know your personal graph and how to read it.

my The secret of Transit 2.0 This course will show you exactly how to do this: how to accurately read planetary transits, time life events, and interpret aspects of transits in your chart. This is one of the most practical courses I have built in my almost 40 years of teaching.
