I can’t stop crying. None of us can do that. Oceans of sadness always come crashing down for a variety of reasons. It is difficult to think, plan, and construct complete sentences. As I write this, the greater Los Angeles area remains in deep crisis. The wind isn’t blowing, the rain isn’t falling, and the current of fear that even more untold devastation is around the corner is palpable.
Entire neighborhoods were destroyed. Altadena, a historic black community born during the civil rights movement, has disappeared. The Palisades and Pacific Coast Highway were scorched. Wild animals are exposed to fear. And the ecosystem was destroyed. There are toxins in our air that only God knows how they will affect the health of our bodies, our babies, our food, our planet, and our communities.
If there’s one thing that becomes clear in this moment, it’s how much we need each other. I was obsessed with every word people around me said, desperately wanting to know what other people were feeling, thinking, judging, and processing. Who lost what? Some? Who needs a home? where did they go? Have they lost everything? Don’t they know yet? Who else do you need to text, call, or leave voice notes? It’s certainly a trauma response, but it feels like an ancient technology deeply embedded within us. Please extend your hand. Please keep in touch. Please check in. We need community to get through this. Caring for each other is how we discover the best parts of ourselves and that is the meaning of our lives. The greatest purpose for which we can live.
we need us. Especially since we are completely unprepared for the effects of climate change. We are in the midst of one of the worst disasters known to this City of Angels. And we are in the midst of the inauguration of the next US president, who (among many other exceptionally difficult matters) is a climate change denier. A man who vowed to open the floodgates to more capitalist, colonial, and corporate violence is about to ascend to the throne.
The current villains of our stories are unmasked and unashamedly proud of the gains they make from our losses.
When I first saw January’s horoscope a few months ago, I winced. The opening monologue of 2025, loaded with signatures of constant challenge, was not something I was looking forward to. Especially knowing the results of the US election.
The month began with an opposition between Mars and Pluto on January 2nd. This is the trace of something cruel, cruel, harsh, merciless, volcanic, extreme, and scarring. It also symbolizes a big power play. It coincides with a week of extreme violence in New Orleans, New York and Las Vegas here in the US, and also calls for Canada to become the 51st state and for Greenland and Panama to come under US control. This coincided with President Trump’s assertion that the system should be established. He would not rule out the possibility of using military force to achieve that goal.
On January 6th, Mars once again turned retrograde back into Cancer (a sign going through very difficult times), hinting at a troubling situation that will take many months to resolve (here until the end of February). going backwards). In Cancer, Mars brings up issues of safety, family, and home.
house.
Of course, the fire broke out in Los Angeles on January 7th. The two largest fires, the Palisades and Eaton fires, immediately evacuated thousands of people and destroyed homes in our communities. Decades of memories and proof of lineage remain alive in the smoke. And we are still counting our losses and preparing for what will happen next. I pray for rain.
The Full Moon in Cancer coinciding with retrograde Mars (still within opposition to Pluto) on January 13 expanded on difficult themes regarding home and family. From a distance and from the “comfort” of my vantage point in 2024, this full moon looked painful. This is because Mars frequently coincides with eras of great upheaval. It’s even worse in signs where Mars doesn’t work well, and even more devastating when it goes retrograde. Cancer is a zodiac sign that knows how to activate our most primal emotions, making us swim into the emotional depths and make us want to curl up in the fetal position and scream for our mother. It will become.
It was obvious that by the middle of the month I would be in pain.
But this pain we’re in, this extreme loss we’re experiencing, is at least partially man-made. It’s not that fire isn’t part of natural cycles, but the colonial design we live in seeks to control and destroy the natural world rather than respecting its rhythms. The climate crisis we are in is due to the massive overuse of resources that corporations have been able to get away with. And war. The desires of a few will eventually consume the lives of all of us together. It’s a trap we all know we’re falling into, and moments like this give us a glimpse of a future we don’t want. If we don’t learn from these lessons, if we don’t grieve, if we don’t turn that grief into action, the future is bound to come.
We can do everything to save everything possible. And everything we save gives us back a world of possibilities. If Cancer’s major astrological events teach us anything, it’s that care is our greatest currency.
Next week brings a very different, but equally ominous sign: the conjunction of Pluto and the Sun in Aquarius. This phenomenon, which will occur on January 21st, will be the first in this constellation in about 248 years. It is a symbol of a new era, one that unfortunately coincides with the inauguration of a president who promised us a vision of plutocracy.
I have a lot of thoughts about this signing and this moment. How dark it will look, how heavy, how extreme and all-consuming it will be, and how strange the battle of technologies will be. But I’d like to leave this. If we are talking about Pluto in Aquarius, we need to center on the fact that collectively we are more powerful than them. We know this, but we need to act on it. Every day, all day. With or without compensation. If this is the beginning of a new era, I hope it is one in which it becomes completely clear what we can change and what we can save.
Never miss a note.
