Eyes to Vedic Holidays: Guru Purunima and the Full Moon on July 10th
The first full moon after the summer solstice is very auspicious mentally, which occurs on the 15th day of the month, held on Thursday in the eastern US until about 1500 on July 10th. It is a very auspicious time to receive blessings from the guru and from the great heart. It’s a great time to read spiritual literature and do a puja for your leading expert. Support spiritual knowledge at a good time to donate to spiritual masters and their schools. The meditation and puja performed in Guru Purnima are particularly powerful.
If you don’t have a guru, it’s a day to honor our teachers. Our first teachers were our mothers, and our school teachers, and perhaps our local priests, and our university leaders. Take your time and fondly remember all those who have taken you out of ignorance with deep love and gratitude.
Komilla Sutton discussed the importance of the guru and stated: Guru means someone who dispels the darkness of ignorance. The first person is a spiritual teacher who demonstrates the applicants a path to higher knowledge. He brings light to his disciples by showing them the means to find eternal light. Spiritual masters are extremely important in Vedic philosophy, as they are considered the bridge between individuals and God. The masters open the eyes of the applicants to their higher selves, and show them the light of God that they, the candidates, may have struggled in the darkness. Therefore, only the guru can show the applicant the way to God, and bring them from darkness to light, which is more honored and respected than any other person for centuries.
Guru Purnima is a day to express gratitude to others. In India, for thousands of years, the Sagittarius full moon after the summer solstice is celebrated in honor of the divine masters. Ved Vyasa is considered a leading figure in all masters, and Guru Purnima is dedicated to him. Vyasa edited four Vedas and wrote 18 Puranas, Mahabharata and Srimad Bhagavata. He also taught Dattatreya, who spread the knowledge of Vyasa to other gurus. ”
The history of Guru Purnima is fascinating. Sarabini Rath discusses it:
In yoga lore, it is said that Guru Purunima was the day Shiva became the first or first Guru of Adi. The story is said to have featured Yogis in the Himalayas more than 15,000 years ago. His presence was extraordinary. He turned to him and pleaded with what he was doing, but in the end he paid the attention of the Yogi for weeks and months, he couldn’t ignore the Yogi, heading to another Yogi (the first Yogi), as the Yogi tradition of Yogi revealed the possibility of human beings consciously evolving.
Take a break, enjoy deep meditation and celebrations, and spend time with a spiritual group.
I leave you with a beautiful quote from Jyoti Mathematics by Swami Brahmanada Saraswati Jagaguru Baban Shankarachaya, one of the great spiritual teachers from my spiritual tradition:
It is rare to get the human body. Make the most of it. There are 4 million different kinds of lives that souls can gather. After that, you have the chance to become a human. Therefore, don’t waste your chances to get the human body. If you don’t cherish this, you’ll be left with nothing left in your hands and you will eventually cry.
Because you are human, God has given you the power to think and decide on good and evil. Therefore, you should not consider yourself as a weak or fallen creature. What could have happened up until now may be because you didn’t know, but now be careful… After becoming human, if you don’t reach God, you sold diamonds at the price of spinachh.
Thank you to Komilla Sutton, Sarabini Rath and all my spiritual masters!
