EYE ON THE SKY: SUN IN CAPRICORN

January 14, 2026 – February 12, 2026

After all the great joy and philosophical optimism of Sagittarius, the Sun’s entry into Capricorn on January 14th brings us back to earth, literally. Capricorn is known as Makara In Sanskrit, it is depicted as a goat in Western astrology, but its true symbol is much more mysterious. A dragon-like creature with the face of a deer and the body of an amphibian, it struggles to rise from the swamp of material existence and fly toward the heavens.

In nearly 40 years of practicing Vedic astrology, I have seen this annual journey into Capricorn challenge us all to face fundamental questions. The question is whether spiritual things can be freed from physical prisons.

swamp dragon

Capricorn represents the decline of spiritual energy as it falls into matter and intertwines with material desires. This is the tenth sign of the natural zodiac and is associated with our desire to rise in status, be recognized in the world, build infrastructure, and gain recognition. But this very drive for worldly success can become our cage.

The spiritual essence of Capricorn is this dragon creature emerging from the lagoon and struggling to shed the bonds of materialism. It symbolically represents the dragon of wisdom in esoteric astrology, the universal symbol of the pentagram, the pentagram of divine intelligence.

What makes this sign so complex is that Capricorn is connected to the base or muladhara chakra, from which Kundalini energy originates. Therefore, it contains potential for full realization, but this potential remains grounded and hidden in the Earth and needs to be awakened. If one discovers spirituality, the energy of the coiled serpent is awakened and Capricorn can complete his journey.

realistic, conservative, cautious

If your Vedic Sun, Moon, or Rising sign is Capricorn, you probably embody a very pragmatic individual with conservative values who spends more time preventing problems from occurring than using creative energies. Saturn’s sense of responsibility, which rules Capricorn, makes them excellent employees. Their tenacity and tenacity make them ideal workers.

However, this practicality also has a dark side. Capricorns can become overly suspicious, selfish, have difficulty making friends, show up late or late, be depressed, and become overly concerned about safety. Sometimes we get so caught up in preventing problems that we forget to live. The “more stuff” mentality that accumulates material security can become a prison that prevents the very spiritual freedom this sign is trying to achieve.

Saturn rules Capricorn, which is why it is one of the most difficult signs in the zodiac, which leads to hard work, trials, suffering and not an easy life. It takes many years of struggle and grief to achieve that. Capricorns must find meditation and spiritual practices to break free from the bondage and prison of the material world.

intricate dance of the sun

The relationship between the Sun and Capricorn is both fascinating and paradoxical. Capricorns have a soft spot for the Sun, even though it represents our divine radiance and ultimately we must strive for higher spiritual realms. The Sun is technically a neutral planet for Capricorns, neither friend nor enemy, but it creates a complex dynamic.

When the Sun transits Capricorn, it gives us strength and confidence to achieve in the material world. The Sun rules leadership, authority, and the ability to shine in our careers and public opinion. For those with their Sun in Capricorn, this can manifest as strong business acumen and a desire to build lasting structures.

However, since the Sun is the 8th house lord of Capricorn Leo, it can also lead to abuse of power and vulnerability. When material success is separated from ethical behavior and spiritual awareness, a darker nature emerges. You can see this in someone like Bernie Madoff, of Capricorn Rise fame, who never thought about putting his pension money into his private coffers. As a Capricorn emerging nation, China embodies both Capricorn’s infrastructure-building power and its ethical challenge of material ambition without moral constraints.

The key is balance. When the Sun is exalted in Aries in a Capricorn’s chart, they have a fully realized divine mind and are able to act beyond the constraints of power. However, when the Sun falls into Libra, domineering energies come into play and can push Capricorn into a dark and controlling nature.

Enthusiasm is tempered by discipline.

Capricorns are often full of enthusiasm, energy, and idealism, but their Saturn nature means that they cannot express their talents unless they are earned through continuous effort. This creates an interesting paradox. So, alongside the requirements of patience, discipline, and hard work, there is a desire to rise and be recognized.

This is not an easy energy. Like a great high school coach who pushes you to do great things and does everything in your power to make them happen, Capricorn energy supports hard work, success, and achievement, but it never lets up and makes it a quick picnic. The demands are constant, the standards are high and the journey is long.

balance the physical and spiritual

Solutions to Capricorn challenges always involve Venus, the planet of pleasure, relationships, and sensual experiences. Venus is the best planet for Capricorn, owning the 5th and 10th houses, and its fun-loving nature balances Saturn’s hard-working and brash side. Women especially balance Capricorn men, and marriage, creativity at work, artistic expression, sexual expression, and massage are key to balancing the weight of Saturn.

Mercury is the second best remedy, reminding Capricorns that they need more comedy and humor to overcome suffering and hard work. Watching comedies on TV or participating in improvisational theater may reduce your suffering.

Most importantly, this is a time to value discipline, such as meditation, yoga, and exercise. While the Sun is in Capricorn, Saturn’s natural remedies are easier because Saturn’s disciplined and hard-working energy is more available. Join a gym, take a yoga class, or meditate daily. Spiritual practices that can feel like a daunting effort at other times of the year are now more accessible.

Vulnerability of relationships

With Cancer owning the 7th house, Capricorns are emotionally weak and vulnerable in relationships. They tend to attract emotional partners that are at odds with their practical nature. This creates tension between the calm, rational, and conservative Capricorn energy and the volatile, nurturing, and sensitive energy of the Cancer partner.

The Moon is a difficult planet for Capricorn, and while the Sun is in Capricorn, we may all feel this push and pull between emotional needs and practical responsibilities, between the wisdom of the heart and the calculations of the heart. Learning to respect both becomes essential.

dragon transformation

In summary, Capricorns, and all of us during this solar transit, are powerful creators in the material realm, but in order to jump out of the swamp of suffering, we need to move beyond self-centeredness and discover spirituality. We must remember to be ethical, balance our lives with pleasurable and sensual experiences, and strive to contribute to the healing of humanity.

Then Capricorn will become a Dragon and will be able to fully realize the full power of its inspiration. The coiled serpent energy at the base of the spine ascends through the chakras toward enlightenment. Lagoon creatures can spread their wings and take flight.

This month-long journey asks us all the same questions. Will we stay trapped in the swamp of matter, endlessly accumulating more and avoiding problems, or will we awaken our Kundalini energy and discover the spiritual freedom that has been waiting for us in our base chakras?

As always, the choice is ours.
