The myth of Isis and Osiris
Let’s examine the myth of Isis and her consort Osiris. Osiris, the god of the afterlife and resurrection, was betrayed by his jealous brother Set, who cut his brother’s body into 14 pieces and scattered them across the earth. Isis embarked on a tireless quest to recover her husband’s body. Her dedication and intuition enabled her to find 13 of the 14 pieces. With her magic, Isis recreated the essential missing part, Osiris’ phallus. She even brought the resurrected Osiris to life, enabling him to have a son named Horus. This myth emphasizes Isis’ role as mother, magician, and protector of the dead.
Mother and Guardian
Isis’s role as a mother extends beyond her relationship with Horus. She is often depicted as a nurturer, embodying the qualities of motherhood, fertility and protection of children. The image of Isis, often depicted suckling Horus, became a powerful symbol of maternal care and protection, eventually evolving into the Christian image of the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus. Isis is the protector of life and, like the Greek Persephone, symbolizes the cycles of birth, growth and resurrection.
Isis, the patron deity of the dead, is frequently invoked in funeral rites, her protective powers guiding and protecting the souls of the dead on their journey to the afterlife. Isis’ role in the resurrection of Osiris highlights her ability to transcend the boundary between life and death, bringing hope and continuity beyond the afterlife.
