You’ve ordered good looking clothing from a European brand, but do you wonder if it was made for a child’s mannequin? we all I went there. A recent letter from one of our readers reminded us how difficult (and honestly, frustrating) the US plus-size conversion game can be, especially if you are trying to shop internationally without needing a PhD in fashion mathematics.
Let’s face it: Knowing your size across boundaries can feel like trying to crack a secret code. Between a variety of sizing systems, brand contradictions, and even “true size” is enough for a winding girl to give up and stick to her sweatpants. But don’t worry. Whether you shop from Paris, Berlin or from a sofa, we break down the basics of plus-size conversions in the US so that we can confidently fill your cart.
US Plus Size Conversion Tips for Shop Online with International Plus Size Designers:
- UK Sizing: The sizes found on UK sites are not the same as US sizing. There’s no Australian sizing either! To help you, always refer to the size chart. Also check if they have US plus size conversions on their site.
- For plus-size clothing stores that don’t offer size conversions on the site, there are resources available. Kathy’s Curvy Corner is an excellent reference featuring size conversions in multiple countries, including lingerie metric sizing.
- Most international brands now have it US version of their websiteif possible, use them as much as you can and provide some guidance along the way! for example, Evans, ASOS curve, Chic chicand Dorothy Perkins To help you shop, have the US version of their website where sizing is converted to US sizing! As we are located in the US, most of the links we provide (especially on my plus size designer list) are the US version of the site!
- Know that each retailer and designer has its own aesthetic. For example, Dorothy Perkins fits more on the small side, but when you look at the making of the dress, you need to see if it’s worth trying, depending on your shape.
- Return policy. When shopping online from a plus-size clothing store, it is important to choose a retailer with a generous return policy. ASOS is a standout in this field, and Dorothy Perkins also offers a simple return. However, one of the drawbacks of Dorothy Perkins is its lack of fast delivery options.
- If you shop from a plus-size clothing store and are not sure about sizing, even after checking the plus-size conversion chart, it may be helpful to buy items in two sizes if possible. Buying the size you think is right will save you time and ensure a better fit, along with one size or down depending on the retailer’s fit.
Understanding UK sizing is important, especially when shopping at international plus-size clothing stores, to ensure the right one for the first time. Variations in cross-regional size make your shopping experience smoother and more enjoyable with reliable conversion charts and resources. Whether you’re focusing on UK-based brands or navigating global retailers, you can save time by double checking sizes, save returns, wardrobe your frustration, and shop with confidence in your style you love.
