As I get older and understand more about the definition of “chic,” I realize that style is in the details. The smallest, most underrated choice is what separates a stylish outfit from one that looks effortless and expensive. A perfect example is something that most people pay little attention to: the color of sheer tights.
For years, black tights were the default. Fail-safe, classic, no doubt. But if you pay attention to people who always look appropriately dressed, you’ll notice a quiet change. Sheer brown tights are replacing black tights, and once you see the difference, it’s impossible to ignore it. Brown tights read more naturally on a variety of skin tones, creating a seamless, elongated effect that feels sophisticated rather than heavy.
I first noticed this change last winter when I saw content creators on my social feeds talking about brown sheer tights and showing how they looked on the body compared to black sheer tights. I made the switch almost immediately and slowly replaced all the black tights in my wardrobe with brown ones. I wore it with a miniskirt, A little black dress, a long wool or leather coat that I wore as a dress, and I haven’t looked back since.
After testing over 20 pairs from brands like Calzedonia, Commando, Wolford, and Hanes, I can confidently say that I’m an expert in sheer brown tights. I have inspired several friends and family members and they continue to be grateful to me. It’s easy to write a thesis on why brown tights look more stylish and photogenic, but you have to see them to believe it.
That being said, keep scrolling to find the sheer brown tights that I’ve tested, styled, and absolutely loved over the years. And one more thing: If I can influence you or teach you anything else today, it’s that the secret to keeping your tights from tearing is to spray them with hairspray. Find and shop around for a few different hairsprays while shopping for new tights.

Commando the Essential Sheer Tights
Size range: S-XL
Sizing tips: If you are between sizes, choose the larger size
material: 73% nylon, 27% elastane
Test review: I’ll start with my favorite sheer tights, The Essential Sheer Tights by Commando. There’s a lot to love about this pair. First, the waistband is made from the same raw, non-cutting material as the brand’s proven underwear and thongs, so it’s gentle on the skin, non-constricting, and won’t show any lines under tight dresses or skirts. I also love that the threads aren’t as porous as other sheer tights, which creates an airbrushed smooth effect on the legs. In terms of color, this brand’s brown, also known as espresso, is a little more like terracotta than true chocolate brown. Although it is not the same color as the waistband, it still looks stylish on the body.

Size range: XS-L
Sizing tips: Works true to size
material: 85% polyamide, 15% elastane
Test review: When someone asks where they can find the best tights, I always tell them Calesdonia. This sock brand offers plenty of options for every body type and preference, and its products are affordable and durable. The Sheer Essentials style is one of the brand’s classic pairs, available in 8, 20, or 40 denier. I always choose size 20 because it has just the right amount of sheerness. These everyday tights feature a wide, comfortable waistband that provides lightweight support. My favorite part is that there’s no thick, dark fabric around the thigh or toe area, so you can wear it with miniskirts, shorts, and open-toed shoes.

Hanes Silk Reflection Control Top Tights
Size range: A/BI/J
Sizing tips: run small
material: Panties: 84% nylon, 16% spandex. Legs: 85% nylon, 15% spandex
Test review: Anyone who says you can’t find great sheer tights on Amazon is wrong. Hanes’ Silk Reflections Pantyhose is a great option. I learned about this product after an influencer posted it on Instagram. It was only $12, so I thought, “Why not give it a try?” It features a “control top” that extends from the center of the waist to the upper thighs, and a reinforced toe that prevents rungs. The only caveat is that the size is small and the fabric is slightly compressed, making it difficult to wear. We recommend rolling it up and starting at your feet and slowly pulling it up. However, once you wear it, it’s perfect for a night out.
Buy tights:
Wolford Individual 20 Tights
Size range: XS-L
Sizing tips: Works true to size
material: 79% nylon, 21% elastane
Test review: Wolford is known as one of the most trusted brands in tights thanks to its durability and clean look. it’s true. However, this brand of pantyhose is quite expensive, so I’ll keep the price low since it’s an investment. Two of the brand’s most popular sheer styles are the Satin Touch Tights and Individual Tights. The main difference is that Satin Touch tights have glitter while Individual tights do not. I bought the Individual Tights because I like a matte finish. This style comes in 10 and 20 denier and is quite sheer and delicate. The double intertwined elastane stretches with every movement, preventing runs and tears. However, you need to be gentle when putting it on and taking it off. The only downside is that the waistband is thinner than other tights, so it can dig into your skin.
