Finding clothes that fit well is a universal quest, but for those of us who navigate the world as both plus size and petite, this journey often feels like a quest, especially when it comes to pants, it feels like an epic and unwinning battle. I’ve heard your concerns and frustration about this issue. Most importantly, I have experienced firsthand the unique, petite plus size struggle that makes pants shopping an effort to really offend.

For years, my wardrobe has been a cemetery of inappropriate pants and jeans. I found a pair that flattered my curves, but found that they added rebuttal fabric around my ankles. Or, if the length was correct, a small percentage was…off everywhere else. The waistband may be gape, thighs may be too tight, or there may be plenty of extra fabric on the crotch.

Despite its advances, the fashion industry is always a reminder that in many cases, they often design for a very specific and idealized figure that does not explain the reality of many small, plus-sized individuals.

Understanding the unique petite plus size struggle of fashion

The heart of the problem is in a limited understanding of what really means when “plus size” and “pearl” are combined. When people think of “plus size,” they may assume that the person is on the higher end of the spectrum. Many might assume that if you want a larger size, you also need longer seams.

“Petite” is often misunderstood as “skinny” or “slim”, but it usually corresponds to people on the shorter edge of the spectrum, that is, those from 5’4 onwards. However, petite sections often do not include plus size percentages. So, if the person is both short and curved, the result is a massive cutting of sizing and design. It’s like trying to attach a square peg to a round hole, only the pegs are gorgeous and curved, and the holes are awkwardly sized.

I spent countless hours scrolling through the online shop and optimistically clicking through the “Petite Plus” section, but only come across a small selection that rarely surpasses basic black pants and stretch-out jeans. For brands I’ll do it It offers a “petty plus” option. Often, it means that it was carved a few inches from the hem of a regular plus size pants without adjusting the rise, knee placement or overall silhouette. This leads to pants that don’t tie up awkwardly, create strange bulges, or sit on your body. My inseam is a specific measurement and it’s frustrating to feel like an afterthought all the time.

The emotional sacrifice of this struggle is true. It’s not just about finding pants. It’s something that is seen, cherished and responded by the industry that benefits from the desire to look and feel better. Every failed shopping trip has realised confidence and the simple act of dressing feels like a personal challenge. Tailoring could be a solution, but it is an additional cost and is not necessary. Plus, you don’t have to adjust all of the pants you own.

What is the answer to these petite plus-size struggles? For brands, it is about truly understanding and investing in body diversity. This means not only shrinking or blocking the fabric from existing lines, but also creating specific patterns and designs for petite plus-sized bodies. It means listening to your customers and realizing that beauty is in all shapes and sizes. and Heights. For us, the consumer, it means continuing to defend and support our brand. do Make it right and share our experiences to continue the conversation.

I believe that one day walking into a store or browsing online for pants is not a source of fear, but a fun experience for everyone. Until then, the winding fashionistas continue to highlight the brands that are making progress and share tips on navigating this tricky terrain. We are taking part in this together, and our collective voices can and will make a difference.
