I have fashion “rules” that I always have to follow. Jumpers look best layered over a white T-shirt. Crew socks always look sleeker than ankle socks. But there are also so-called style commandments that I would like to leave in the past. The most perplexing of these is the idea that you shouldn’t wear brown and black together.
That rule never really clicked with me ever since I first heard it. In my eyes, the moody combination is one of the most chic combinations of winter. Dark and rich without being too heavy, the two tones blend beautifully with each other, creating a tranquil and luxurious palette that fits perfectly against the dark backdrop of the season.
Clearly sharing my opinion, Sofia Richie Grainge stepped out this week wearing the very combination in question. An all-black base, sleek turtleneck, and floor-skimming skirt anchored the look, which she layered with a chocolate brown trench coat for extra warmth.
The combination of black and brown has long been avoided for fear of looking heavy, but I argue that it is the most sophisticated alternative to an all-black outfit and is much more interesting. The key is in the styling. Take a cue from Sophia. Start with a solid base of your chosen tone and introduce other hues through your coat, shoes, and accessories to add depth and dimension.
