A ship full of British prisoners sails the 15,000 miles to Australia – punishment for their crimes. After a deadly voyage, they arrive in 1788. But maintaining discipline in the colony is hard work and cruelty is rife. In an attempt to keep the prisoners disciplined and “civilize” this hopeless, violent, poverty-stricken population, ambitious young Lieutenant Ralph Clarke decides to stage a play.
With a mostly illiterate cast, growing distrust amongst peers and a lead actor facing death by hanging, this is a theatre production like no other…
In this brand new production, Timberlake Wertenbaker reprises her signature work examining power within the British justice system and, working with consultant Ian Michael, pays tribute to Indigenous Australian voices and histories.
Artistic Director Rachel O’Riardan (A Doll’s House, Sprott’s Iphigenia)’s Olivier Award-winning classic is based on the incredible true story of the British Empire’s most remote penal colony. With deportation now more relevant as a punishment than ever before, Our Country’s Good takes on new meaning in 2024.
