Many of us are second life The story begins with a specific gap in the market where an incredibly talented entrepreneur finds a solution to fill a need. Imani Ellis is a prime example of this case. In 2016, after finding success with the NBC Pages program and landing a communications job at Bravo, Ellis noticed a gap. There wasn’t a space for Black and brown creators to connect, share resources, and grow together. Rather than wait for a community to emerge, she created one herself. From her Harlem living room, she founded Creative Collective, a space dedicated to uplifting young creators of color by providing networking opportunities and critical resources. And importantly, she did it all while working her way up to VP level in her day job.
In 2017, Ellis launched CultureCon, an annual conference that quickly became central to the Creative Collective’s mission. Over the past seven years, she has expanded Collective and CultureCon into highly influential platforms and evolved them into hubs of inspiration offering panels, workshops, career fairs, and unique activities that empower attendees. I’m here. The event has attracted celebrities such as Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae, and Regina King, solidifying its role as a beacon for creators of color.
Ellis’ dedication and entrepreneurial spirit led her to a new beginning and ending. In 2022, she made the bold decision to leave NBCUniversal, working her way up from page rep to vice president of communications to unscripted entertainment publicist in just 10 years. Her leap into full-time entrepreneurship has allowed her to further expand and diversify her business ventures with a clear focus on building community and empowering underrepresented voices. Ta.
