The Rev. Jesse Jackson, a civil rights leader, Baptist minister, and founder of Operation PUSH and the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, has died at the age of 84, his family announced.

Born in Greenville, South Carolina, Jackson rose to national prominence by marching with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the civil rights movement and advocating for racial equality, voting rights, and economic justice. After Dr. King’s assassination in 1968, Jackson continued to organize and mobilize communities across the United States, with a focus on expanding opportunities for Black Americans and other marginalized groups.

In 1971, he founded Operation PUSH (People United to Save Humanity), an organization dedicated to improving the economic conditions of Black communities through corporate responsibility, education initiatives, and voter registration efforts. He then founded the Rainbow PUSH Coalition and expanded its mission to build a multiracial political movement centered on social and economic justice.

Jackson made history as one of the first black candidates to begin a full-scale campaign for the U.S. presidency. He ran for office in 1984 and 1988, helping expand the electorate and encouraging greater political participation of minority communities. His campaign emphasized coalition building and introduced issues of economic inequality and civil rights into mainstream political discussion.

In recognition of his decades of advocacy and leadership, Mr. Jackson received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, one of the highest civilian honors. Throughout his life, he remained a vocal advocate of peace, voting rights, workers’ rights, and the international human rights movement.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson’s legacy is defined by his dedication to justice and his abiding call to “keep hope alive,” a message that resonated across generations and helped shape modern American politics.

He left a lasting mark on the fight for equality and the movement that continues in his name.
