Nzinga Imani Talks Career & Plus Size Representation

Nzinga Imani is a multifaceted force in the entertainment industry, seamlessly navigating the world of acting, modeling, singing and entrepreneurship. In a recent interview with Curve Fashionistas, Imani got a glimpse into her current project, her philosophy on career diversification, and her passionate advocacy for plus-size expression, particularly within the plus-size community.

“Next week we’ll start filming for a new project! It’s the second season called ‘I’ve got a story to tell.’ It makes me think of the Black Mirror, but I’m the lead in one of the episodes and I’m really excited.

This upcoming role promises to be a challenging role, demanding that she portray a character who is causing a significant personality change, allowing Imani to showcase her emotional scope as an actress. Beyond her television productions, Imani is also actively involved in realizing other projects. Wearing her producer hat, she was executive produced and starred in upcoming films, friend zone.

“We’re still shopping, but we hope we’ll pick up soon,” she revealed.

Additionally, she challenges writing, develops projects with her sister, and explores contrasting experiences of women in the industry. “As a plus-size person, I can look at what someone else is dealing with and assume there are no specific issues. There’s still a lot more to deal with on the other side of the spectrum,” Imani explained, highlighting her commitment to telling meaningful stories that challenge the story and encourage deeper thinking.

“You have to do all that and not be scared of doing more. You have to be able to do multiple things, especially when it comes to the arts industry,” Imani said.

She acknowledges the old saying, “Whose Master is Jack of All Trades?”, but counters that in creative fields, diversity is often essential, especially at the early stages of one’s career.

“You may have to become a single female team before you have a team. You have to be skilled enough to know and put things together for yourself before you can afford that team.”

Imani emphasizes the value of exploring other crafts while insisting on focusing on key goals. Because these experiences often enrich and inform your main pursuits.

Defends natural hair and plus size expression

In addition to being a complete boss, Nzinga Imani is also a defender of the media’s natural hair and voice of plus-size expression. The actress has become known for her consistent natural hairstyle in her on-screen roles. Some may assume this is a production choice, but Imani says she made the call. why? “I love the natural look of hair, and it’s so beautiful for me,” she said.

“I know I represent the community. I’m grateful that girls, people, women from the ’70s to 10 have come to me and represented them for us.”

“Even if we’ve ever been there, it’s heartbreaking to see how slowly we’re bringing back our toes,” she said. “We’ll notice, we’re looking at how thick the straps are when you make plus size clothes, where your back can soak, all sorts of things, all sorts of things, so we have a different understanding of all sorts of things, so it’s not the same.”

Looking at the future of society’s plus-size fashion, Imani remains optimistic, believing that “the pendulum is always shaking.” She highlights the ongoing presence and purchasing power of plus-size consumers, and predicts that brands will ultimately recognize their economic obligation to meet this demographic.

She also highlights the importance of community support for comprehensive brands of sizes that do it right.

“This year is the fifth year, so they’re having a three-day weekend, and that’s really quite a bit,” she explained.
