Heading to Paris for the Olympics? Bumble launches French dating guide to find your (real) Gabriel this summer
This summer, the world is flocking to Paris, where people of all nationalities are sparking romance in the city of love. To help singles avoid cultural hurdles and get the most out of their summer dating, Bumble has brought together relationship experts from around the world to share their top dating tips. French Style.
A recent survey by Bumble and YouGov found that an overwhelming majority (78%) of French singles aged 18-34 are open to dating someone from outside of France this summer. - Engage in thoughtful discussions – French culture favors private conversations and frowns on small talk. Dive into a variety of topics, from sports and literature to the latest in politics, music and movies. Unleash your inner philosopher and don’t be afraid to share your culture. Almost half (49%) of French singles aged 18-34 would like to know about the customs and history of your country, and Irish people have a lot to add to this conversation. Adding a bit of humor will turn a stimulating conversation into a laugh-out-loud date. Bonus: say you love me too, in place of Edith Piaf. Françoise Hardy, France Gall, or Barbara. - Become fluent in French – Even if your date speaks English, trying out some French key phrases will add to the romantic atmosphere, with more than one in three French people (37%) agreeing. For inspiration, think back to your Leaving Cert French class:I love it” (i adore you), “Soiree Ensemble(Date Night) and “It’s embarrassing We jokingly debate the pronunciation of ? (Can I have a kiss?).Croissant” We laughed together trying to understand the nuance of “Ebroisan“Sparkle” can add a fun twist to a date.
- Modern Chivalry – Who pays the bill? In French culture, it’s often considered polite for the person who asks (or starts) the date to offer to pay, but there are no specific rules. The best thing to do is to explain your expectations and be flexible. You could also consider splitting the bill 50/50 (“50-50 Truth”) or take turns treating each other. The most important thing is to communicate openly and find a solution that is comfortable for both of you.
- “Quart d’Heure de Politesse” – In France, there’s a concept of “15 minutes courtesy”, which means leaving 15 minutes to meet up. For over a quarter of French people (28%), not following this rule is a red flag. If you’re meeting someone for drinks at 7pm, you both know that no one will mind if you turn up anytime between 7 and 7:15. And if you arrive later than that? Cue worried looks and awkward apologies! It’s like an unspoken rule, and part of the appeal is being stylishly late… just don’t be more than 15 minutes late.
- Contrary to what you might see on TV, the French prefer low-key dating – Breaking the cliché of elaborate and expensive dates, the modern French dater prefers low-key, casual outings, but without forgetting elegance. Today’s French dating scene welcomes a casual, relaxed atmosphere where authenticity and connection are at the heart of it. A popular choice is to have a glass of wine on a casual terrace. Also, keep your alcohol intake moderate: it’s rude to get drunk in public.
- Safety first – Safety is paramount, especially when you’re in a new, unfamiliar place and might not speak the language. Meet your date in a public place, don’t give out the address of where you’re staying, and let a friend, family member, or hotel concierge know where you’re going. Make sure they’re in the local time zone. Trust your instincts and be wary of people who are overly curious about your financial situation or solo traveler status.
