I love a good headpiece. What can I say – maybe it was inspired by Chloe King?! Pillbox hats started trending again last year. I had purchased two pillbox hats at Canned Ham Vintage here in Sarasota a few years ago, so I was really excited about this one. This hat is feminine and nostalgic, yet somehow modern and cool. Today I’m going to take a closer look at the pillbox hat’s origins, fit, current favorite styles, and how I wear it.
Where does the pillbox hat originate from?
A pillbox hat is a small, sturdy, brimless hat with straight sides and a flat top that is simple in shape but incredibly chic. Their exact origins are debated, but there are several leading theories. Some historians trace the silhouette back to early military caps, while others believe the modern fashion version dates back to 1930s Hollywood, specifically Adrian’s design for Greta Garbo. Of course, this style became truly iconic in the early 1960s when Jacqueline Kennedy made the pillbox hat a signature part of her sophisticated wardrobe. No matter which origin story you subscribe to, you can’t deny its timeless appeal.
How should a pillbox hat fit?
I think these items often require a bit of trial and error when it comes to finding the perfect fit. Most styles only come in one size and fit is everything. You don’t want it to be so big that it overwhelms your head, but you also don’t want it to be so small that it looks like it’s sitting awkwardly on top of your head. I’ve ordered a lot of things over the years that just don’t work because they’re too big or too small, but unfortunately there’s no good way to adjust them.

In general, I think pillbox hats are very difficult to find, but since they are currently trending, they are now easily available from various brands and retailers. Although you can certainly get new ones from sites like moda operandi and anthropologyI would argue that some of the best styles can still be found at local vintage and thrift shops, as well as artisans on Etsy.
