With a new season just around the corner, fall fashion is on my mind. Chunky knit sweaters, wide-leg jeans, classic turtlenecks… there are so many fun items on my pre-fall wish list. One of my favorite pieces to layer is a chic blazer. I’ve accumulated a pretty impressive (or pretty embarrassing, depending on how you look at it) collection of blazers. I love that these pieces can be styled with anything, from cocktail parties to everyday wear. Today, I’m going to talk about how to wear a blazer. I’ll touch on my favorite blazer brands, give advice on different ways to wear these pieces, and share my personal tips on wearing a blazer.

The first step in learning how to wear a blazer is to find the perfect blazer. So let me share with you some of the best places to buy these items. The market for buying blazers is overwhelming and the prices vary widely for the quality. If you are a bit confused on where to start, here are some of my favorite blazer brands to choose from depending on your budget.

Nili Lotan
About three years ago, Nili Lotan It’s become a brand that really appeals to me, and after purchasing this blazer and wearing it throughout my trip to Europe last summer, I’m hooked. Although it’s pricey, it’s one of the best value pieces in my closet. It’s also a heavier-weight jacket than normal, so if you’re looking for something a little more substantial to keep you warm, this is a great piece. I’ve had my eye on this blazer for a while. This chocolate brown and Something that transcends this time!
Zara
Looking for a way to wear a blazer without spending a lot of money? Here are my top picks: Zara blazeris affordable, yet of such quality that it can stay in your closet for more than a season or two. I have a few blazers from this brand, bought nearly 10 years ago, that I still wear often. Keep in mind that Zara is very seasonal, so while they have a small selection of blazers right now, they will have a great selection in September and October. My Zara blazer collection is very diverse – cropped, longer, fitted, oversized.
Other blazer brands
Obviously, this is not a complete list. There are many other brands that make blazers that I love. Here are a few that I love: Smythe, J.Crew, Avec Les Filliesand TheRealReal’s large selection of pre-owned luxury blazers. This one, This oneand This one.
How to wear a blazer: classic ideas and combinations
Now that we know where to shop, let’s talk about how to wear a blazer, from casual airport wear to classy cocktail dresses. Blazers can be worn in so many different ways – a single blazer can be worn for a chic, streamlined look one day, and a more complex layered look the next.
How to wear a blazer over your shoulders
While it’s still hot outside, it’s usually freezing cold inside here in Florida. One way to beat the gusts of air conditioning is to throw a blazer over the shoulders of a loose-fitting dress. It’s a great way to add a pop of color, warmth, and “complete” your look. You can see examples of such blazer outfits here, here, and here.
Match
Looking for an easy way to wear a blazer? Opt for a matching set! I love the matching style. There are a few options for this. You can wear a set of shorts and a blazer, a set of blazer and pants, or a set of a blazer and a coordinating skirt. Wearing a matching set takes a lot of the guesswork out of styling and allows you to accessorize more.
How to wear a blazer with a belt
Wondering how to pair a belt with a blazer? It’s a huge trend right now, especially with western-style belts. I’ll be honest, I’ve loved this blazer style for years (check out this post from 2018), so it’s no surprise that it feels fresh now! Earlier this year, I shared a bunch of blazer and belt combos, and I totally agree with all of these styles!
The key to pulling this off is to make sure your blazer and layers aren’t too bulky. Additionally, the belt should sit at a natural high waist, which I think is the most flattering way to wear this style.
How to layer blazers
Now, let’s look at how to layer blazers. First, I like to layer a coat over a double-breasted blazer or a blazer. This is a bit It may not be as well known to others, but I love the depth it creates and the ability to mix materials. You can see how I paired my favorite blazer with a coat here and here. In another look, I layered two blazers. If you want to get more creative, you can also try layering it with a cape.
The trick to making these layering looks work is to have a base blazer that fits slightly to the body, and the jacket or blazer you layer on top of it that is slightly oversized, with plenty of room to crisscross over the shoulders and back.
Layered, Take Two
Another fun way to layer is to wear a tissue turtleneck under a button-down shirt and then layer a blazer on top. It sounds like a lot of clothing, but trust me, it’s not a lot of clothing! Check out one of my favorite examples: hereAnd if you really want to take a risk, you can even stack these pieces in the reverse order, with the buttons on top, as shown here.
How to wear a blazer: do’s and don’ts
Although I’ve given you some specific tips on how to wear a blazer above, I thought it might be helpful to list them all out. Of course, how you put together your outfit will depend on your personal style. But these are some of the things I always keep in mind when wearing a blazer.
1. Pay attention to proportions.
This is especially important once you start layering: make sure your base layers aren’t longer than your outer layers, and choose bottom and skirt lengths that balance with your top styling.
2. Don’t make it too bulky.
Whatever you wear, you want it to be comfortable and not restrictive. Therefore, choose base layers that are not too bulky and allow you to move around freely. Especially when layering, choose items that are slightly larger and have room around the shoulders and upper arms.
3. Don’t be afraid to play with color.
When most people think of fall, dark hues and neutrals come to mind, but don’t be afraid to have fun with color and mix and match prints. I especially love teal, red, and mustard shades for fall.
4. Don’t ruin your look with an ill-fitting blazer.
If you’re opting for a cleaner, more classic style with fewer layers, the fit of your blazer is important: the most flattering blazers are well tailored and don’t have big drag lines, saggy collars or ill-fitting sleeves.
