Here in the Atlantic-Pacific, I’m all about creativity and looking fancy. However, when I spend my daily life behind the scenes, my reality looks a little different. On those days, I like uniforms that I can throw on quickly. Not only are these styles comfortable to wear, but having some basic outfit ideas you can trust means one less decision to make. I also know I’m not the only one who always feels stuck with decisions.
So today, we’re going to talk about some tips on how to create your own daily uniform, one that’s comfortable, simple, and representative of you. I’ll also share some of my personal favorite pieces that I wear over and over again, and some basic outfit ideas you can always rely on.
Tips for creating basic outfits
When creating your daily uniform, be sure to base it on your own personal style. The tips below will help you come up with basic outfit ideas, but personal clothing preferences will definitely vary from person to person. Since today’s post is all about casual everyday options, I think it’s especially important to embrace your unique style since these looks will be worn over and over again.
1. Choose items that are comfortable.
Choosing a comfortable everyday uniform is just as important as having a look that makes you feel like you. Personally, these are the clothes I wear when I’m running errands around town, sitting at my desk on a Zoom call, or preparing or organizing a photo shoot. For these activities, you always want to wear something that fits well and is comfortable to wear for hours. The goal is to feel included without compromising comfort.
2. Identify your color palette.
Each season, I try to come up with 2-3 basic outfit ideas that I can wear in heavy rotation. For these looks, we’ve selected our favorite wardrobe staples and made sure they’re easy to mix and match. I love bold colors, but for these casual looks, I find it easier to stick to neutrals or narrow color families. Not only does this take the guesswork out of your everyday outfits, but it also leaves you a little more room to vary your outfits. Grouping all your items in a similar color palette gives you even more opportunities to style them in different ways.
3. Build your base.
Once you’ve established a base look for each season, you can build a variety of outfits around it with just a few tweaks. This basic style varies depending on the season, but since winter has just begun, I’ll use this season as an example.
During the winter, my go-to ensemble consists of great bottoms, a sweater, layered t-shirts, a great third piece, and comfortable shoes. More details below. But overall, my base look for the season starts with choosing the most worn casual pieces in my closet. From there, I like to fill in the gaps with items that may be missing. I also try to choose items that require little maintenance, meaning they don’t need to be steamed or ironed before being worn.
4. Accessorize with purpose.
Again, the purpose of your everyday uniform is to be comfortable and easy to wear. The same goes for costume accessories.
I tend to keep jewelry for everyday use to a minimum. But don’t be afraid to add big earrings like these or layer several earrings. favorite necklace together. This allows you to add a little flair and personal touch without stressing about how to accessorize your outfit.
