Happy New York Fashion Week! The six-day marathon is already buzzing with beauty inspiration, and the styles we’ve seen so far serve as a blueprint for this year’s hottest trends. (More on that to come!) It’s only natural that when multiple forward-thinking artists come together, the results can be downright magical.
Hair Alchemy Alice + Olivia It’s particularly fascinating. Matthew Curtisthe show’s head hairstylist Sora Salongave Who What Wear an exclusive first look at his creation, a dreamy, embellished twist with a “romantic Parisian” vibe that I have a feeling will be making an appearance on every mood board. Check out all the details below (including a tutorial from Curtis!) and get a head start on the elegant hair trend that’s set to dominate this fall and beyond.
What is romantic Parisian hair?
Think classic French hairstyles: twisted chignon, tousled shag, Bardot Bangor symbolic French BobAdd delicate hair accessories like hair pins, metallic embellishments and lace appliqués to these styles to create a romantic feel and complete your romantic Parisian hairstyle.
It’s no secret that hair accessories are quickly becoming a cool-girl style icon (they were everywhere). Copenhagen Fashion WeekWhile Parisian romantic style (both on and off the runway) tends to lean more toward polished styles, Curtis says Parisian romantic style is a bit more sophisticated: think subtle accents (rosettes, pearl embellishments) that highlight your natural hair pattern but don’t take away from the look. “I was inspired to create this hairstyle by imagining a romantic afternoon stroll through the gardens of the Palace of Versailles,” Curtis adds.
Not only are these styles a beautiful complement to the brand’s SS25 collection (which was lavish with embellishment and embroidery), but they’re also great options for fall: “Reflecting the sophistication of fall fashion, they add an elegant, understated flair to layering,” Curtis adds. Hair Bow Trend We saw them all over the Spring/Summer 2024 runways (even Alice + Olivia!) and while bows are definitely not going away, this year Curtis predicts a softer, more romantic take on the coquette style.
“Pearls and bejeweled clips are subtly woven into the look, a subtle yet impactful touch that adds a sophisticated and romantic twist,” he says. To take a cue from the Alice and Olivia playbook, opt for mini dahlias, gold coins, white lace, or a single oversized scrunchie (butter yellow, cherry red, pale blue, or patterned, your choice) for what Curtis calls a “modern, flowing, coquette vibe.”
How to Master the Romantic Parisian Hairstyle
A romantic base (think: a braided bun) is key before accessorizing. Curtis starts by using Briogeo Yuzu + Plum Oil Full Miracle Styling Foam on dry hair to add texture, then blow-dries it with her GHD hairdryer. (This foam doubles as a heat protectant, BTW!) “Put a generous amount in your hands and work it from roots to ends,” Curtis explains. This will create volume and texture. Next, use a wide curling iron to curl the mid-lengths and ends.
He uses his hands to pull the hair loosely to about the middle of the back of his head and puts it into a ponytail with a rubber band. Then he grabs a bun ring (also called a band donut) to create a denser bun, pulling the ponytail to the middle and securing it with a pin. “Separate the ponytail according to length and thickness and make regular Dutch braids in different sections at the back,” he explains. “Wrap the braid over the ring. [which] It creates texture, drama and volume in your bun.”
For the Jumbo Shushlook, swap out the Dutch braid for a rope braid and gather hair with your hands and wrap it around the base of the ponytail to create an elegant rope chignon.
Finish your style with Briogeo Style & Treat Yuzu + Plum Oil Sleek Stick, running along your hairline to eliminate flyaways and smooth edges. “It’ll add a polished finish to any look!” he says. (Personally, I think it’s a godsend for slicked-back styles.) For thick, curly hair, he also uses the brand’s Style & Treat Yuzu + Plum Oil Lightwork Sculpting Cream to smooth out strands.
Of course, the finishing touch was a smattering of coquette accessories: “I then embellished the braided bun with flowers, coins, and white lace for a romantic Parisian feel,” he says—meaning it’s time for a fantasy upgrade for your hair bow.
