Summer is officially over and we are in the middle of the fall season. That means you may need to update your skin care routine a bit. While switching to emollient creams and moisturizing facial cleansers, you don’t want to forget about sunscreen. Even though the days are shorter and less sunny, the sun’s UV rays are still harmful enough to penetrate your skin.
Wearing sunscreen with at least SPF 15 can reduce your risk of some skin cancers 40% increase. Sunscreen also plays an important role in reducing hyperpigmentation and age spots caused by acne and hormonal changes. Wearing sunscreen year-round will help keep your skin healthy and protected, even when it’s cold.

When choosing a sunscreen, prefer one with at least SPF 30 or higher for maximum protection. Both chemical and mineral sunscreen formulations are available, and which one is most effective is usually based on preference. Mineral sunscreens form a barrier on the surface of your skin, reflecting UV rays away from your skin.

Chemical sunscreens penetrate the top layer of your skin and absorb harmful UV rays before they can cause damage. Chemical sunscreens are also less likely to leave a white cast. Whichever formula you choose, be sure to apply it at least 15 minutes before sun exposure for maximum protection.

As a tip, applying sunscreen is the last step in your skin care routine. Remember to apply it to your face, neck and décolleté to ensure protection in areas exposed to the sun.
