Earlier this week, I traveled to Charleston, South Carolina to celebrate Sergio Hudson’s collaboration with Volvo Cars USA. This is a powerful partnership that celebrates Volvo’s 70 years in the United States and brings together two brands with deep ties to South Carolina.
Sergio Hudson has deep roots in South Carolina. His mother is from Charleston, and his ties to the area run deeper than he initially realized. Charleston is home to one of Volvo’s main factories, where the very new EX90 that inspired his latest collaboration is produced.
Reflecting on the partnership, Hudson said:Cars are made here. For me, there is a triple connection. Our first family car was a Volvo, and my mother worked for Mack Trucks, which was later acquired by Volvo. They build the cars that inspired the collection right here in Charleston, where my mother was born. I had no idea that there was a Volvo factory here, but when it was decided that the event would be held here, I felt like I had come full circle. I’ve been coming here every summer – it really feels like home. ”
Mr Hudson said:We were approached to design an EX90 inspired mini collection using EX90 materials and color palettes. ” Meanwhile, Volvo’s Mr. Silla praised the synergy as follows:I love that his designs are classic and timeless with a twist. The way colors are combined in unexpected ways is elegant and sophisticated. That’s exactly the spirit we want from the EX90. It’s a perfect fit. ”
She explained:We come from a company that is a true Scandinavian brand with roots in the north. Functionality has always been at the core of what we do, shaped by our harsh climate and deep commitment to safety. For a long time, Volvo was seen as sitting between mainstream and luxury, but our goal was to move confidently into premium territory. We focus on craftsmanship, attention to detail and creating designs that are calm, understated and sophisticated, yet never boring, with a distinctly Scandinavian feel. ”
The trip started with a fitting and a first-hand preview of the capsule collection.
Taking inspiration from the all-electric Volvo EX90, Sergio Hudson has created a limited edition line that includes a gray tailored wool blend car coat, made from the same sustainable wool used in the car’s seats, and Dawn’s Nordico belt, inspired by Volvo’s signature three-point seat belt. The three-look capsule moves easily from casual denim to sophisticated houndstooth suiting to after-hours sparkle. This perfectly reflects Hudson’s timeless and confident style.
The first day concluded with an intimate dinner where guests were introduced to the collection and the design philosophy behind it.
On the second day, we took a scenic drive in an electric Volvo model to a stunning villa by the sea. The serene scenery there reflected the elegance of the partnership.
The experience ended with a delicious dinner at Sorelle, one of the best Italian restaurants in Charleston. Perfect for an exciting and fashion-filled vacation.
Of course I wore Sergio Hudson the whole time!
