Most of my closet is made up of skirts. I think the fashion item I style the most is skirts. Skirts and boots, colorful skirts, skirts and sweaters…the possibilities are endless. Lately, I’ve been thinking about how skirts tend to shine in spring and summer for most people, but are often ignored when it comes to fall and winter outfits. Let’s change that! Today I’m sharing some of my favorite skirt outfit ideas for cooler temperatures, as well as some recent styles that caught my eye. Let’s start layering!
How to wear skirts in fall and winter
Before we get into skirt outfit ideas, let’s talk about how to make these items work in the cooler months. After living in New York for many years, I’ve learned a few styling tips that will help you rock your skirt even when the temperatures drop.
Newsflash…you don’t have to be cold
With the arrival of cooler weather, many people understandably avoid skirts because they don’t want to get cold or uncomfortable. But with some creativity, skirts can actually be quite warm. I like to layer tights underneath (sometimes more than one), pair the skirt with boots or tall socks, and sometimes wear heattech biker shorts underneath for extra warmth.
Combine and match lengths
I always love playing with proportions and skirts are perfect for this! For example, I often pair minis with longer coats or dusters. This combination is both functional and fashionable, and one of my favorite fall skirt outfit ideas. If you’re wearing a pencil skirt or high-waisted midi skirt, wear a chunky cropped coat to add balance and interest to your look. Mixing and matching lengths will help define your shape and create a flattering silhouette. Fall/winter layering makes this even more achievable.
always accessorize
When styling skirts for fall and winter, don’t avoid belts, faux fur stoles and gloves. Accessories are a great way to introduce new textures, add a little color blocking, and of course stay warm.
Coordination ideas for autumn/winter skirts
Now that we’ve shared some tips on how to wear these styles in the cooler months, let’s take a look at some skirt outfit ideas. Here are some of my favorite ways to style fashionably while staying warm and comfortable.
1. Mini skirt + layered coat
This combination is one of my favorite ways to style a mini for fall. It is also easy to combine with a thick coat. There are many ways to make your coat your own.
For example, try pairing a chic mini with a blazer and cinching the waist with a belt for added structure. Add tall boots and a second layer of outerwear and you’re ready to go. This classic fall outfit is a great example of a sophisticated and practical look.
If it’s not too cold yet, pairing a miniskirt with sneakers and layering a long coat on top is also a good transition option. I recently styled this look with different shades of green and a combination of materials and textures to keep things interesting.
Finally, you can also leave out the boots and layer with socks and tights instead, like I did with this turtleneck outfit. I love how the mini just barely peeks through the oversized barn coat. It’s a very fun proportion for fall.
2.Autumn midi skirt
I actually wrote an entire article on how to style midi skirts because they are one of my all-time favorite silhouettes. This post contains lots of ideas for coordinating skirts, but here are some of my favorite ways to style these items, especially for cooler weather.
For a dressed-up fall everyday look, I love pairing midi skirts with chunky sweaters and flats. This printed midi and sweater outfit I wore in Paris is a great example of that combination.
If you want to give your midi skirt a party vibe, try pairing it with a peplum top or platforms, like I did here. Another elegant option is to style the midi length with a classic tucked-in blouse and stiletto heels.
Although midi skirts are an inherently feminine shape, don’t be afraid to pair them with masculine shoes. Recently, I styled it with a midi skirt and western boots, as well as loafers and socks. Both styles are beautifully finished. Finding what works for you is all about experimentation and layering.
3. Skirt outfit ideas perfect for parties
With the holiday season just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to start planning your skirt outfits for everything from cocktail parties to festive dinners. There are so many fun styles to choose from now!
wrap maxi skirt

One of my favorite trending skirt styles is the wrap maxi. It’s sophisticated, easy to wear, and has a nice shape.
I recently wore this wrap maxi skirt outfit at the Tuckernuck store, which will open in September. The drawstring at the waist draws the eye, so I simply tucked the top in. To add a little warmth, I draped the sweater over my shoulders without competing with the ribbon.
pencil skirt

Another great option for parties is a pencil skirt. I always feel a little disappointed in this style because many women only associate it with workwear. but here, hereand here Here are some great examples of how this silhouette is party-friendly.
This mixed print look is perfect for a fall cocktail party. I absolutely love the results!
If you want a more overt party look, try a fluted pencil skirt outfit. Pair with Need a little more coverage? turtleneck bodysuit You can also add a fur stole like we did at last winter’s party.

Another fun and unexpected option is a colorful waterfall waist skirt. This unique silhouette instantly becomes the star of the show. No special styling required.
