We recently covered plus size activewear and the different places you can buy it. It’s a great list that has grown over the years, but what if your active lifestyle goes beyond walking and running?

What do you do when life calls for hiking?Skiing? moreover? Then you’ll need to mix and match your plus size outdoor clothing.

Over the years, the world seems to have realized that plus-size people exist and that we live stratified, fulfilled lives.

A few years ago, we did a giveaway for Snow Country Outdoors, a company that focuses exclusively on plus-size outdoor clothing. We’ve been excited about the recent arrival of fashionable and functional plus size ski jumpsuits.

After interviewing the Curvy Kili Crew, a group of plus-size people who climbed Kilimanjaro, our own interest in plus-size outdoor living grew *even* more.

We started digging a little deeper and recognized multiple communities that center and champion the plus-size outdoor lifestyle.

So before we think about rounding up plus size outdoor clothing options, we thought we’d share a few people you should know in this space and the community that champions this niche in the plus size space.

5 Plus-Size Outdoor Communities You Should Know About

1. Climb big

Creator Sam Ortiz Crime Big based in Washington (officially known as Big Girls Climb Too)I started Climb Big to create “She herself found it easier to climb after struggling to find a spot outdoors.”

Rock climbing and the outdoors as a mission “More accessible for fat foxes.” Climb Big addresses the representation, accessibility, gear and attire that plus-size adventurers need to climb safely and confidently. At Climb Big, we’re proud to provide you with the help and support you need.

2. Fat Girl Hiking

Fat Girls Hiking was created by Summer Michaud-Skog. “A self-proclaimed fat queer woman who loves hiking.” For summer, Fat Girls Hiking is all about “fat activities, body liberation, and outdoor community.”

Fat Girls Hiking has multiple elements FGH chapter In 22 cities across the United States. If you’re worried that your hiker will be slow or slow down your group, don’t worry. They intentionally set the pace for the slowest walkers to ensure everyone participates.

Summer is also the author of fat girl hiking: “A Comprehensive Guide to Enjoying the Outdoors for All Sizes and Abilities” was released last year to rave reviews. If you want to find out what a hike is and how to do it before diving into it, this book is for you.

“We want to create a place where overweight and marginalized people can come together in community and create safer spaces outdoors.”

3. Plus size backpacking

“We want plus-size people to understand that they can wear a plus-size backpack.”

Plus size backpacking was born with Charlotte Buell. (@basecampcreative) I noticed that there is no group on FB specifically for plus size backpackers. What Charlotte wanted “Creating a safe and inclusive space for plus size people to ask questions and share knowledge about all things backpacking. No Judgment!!!”

Join over 6,000 other members of this group to ask questions, share your stories, and connect with other backpackers interested in the outdoors. Whether you are an ambitious backpacker, just starting out, or a backpacker with years of experience; plus size backpacking is a great resource for you.

4. trail dams

“Trail Dames is a hiking club for curvaceous women.”

If you love hiking trails, exploring the outdoors, and doing it with others who look and live like you, Trail Dames is the group to watch. It was created by President Anna Hasmaker, who attempted to hike the Appalachian Trail in 2003. “I took six months off work, hiked 700 miles, and broke my leg, but I met more amazing people than I could have ever dreamed of.”

When Anna realized she was the only plus-size person on the trail, she decided she couldn’t keep all the fun to herself and had to share it, so she created this group. trail dams has been created.

Trail Dams’ mission is to: “We welcome, empower, and educate women of all shapes, sizes, experience and fitness levels to explore nature responsibly. Trail Dames provides safe, supportive activities that promote personal growth, friendship, confidence, independence, and a love of the outdoors.”

5. The Unlikely Hiker

Nature is infinitely diverse, and so are we. We are nature. ”

unlikely hiker is “A diverse, anti-racist, and liberating outdoor community featuring underrepresented outdoorsmen.” created by pioneers jenny bruso. Over the past six and a half years with Unlikely Hikers, Jenny has led over 100 hikes in 17 states.

6.WHOA Plus

WHOA Plus was created by WHOA Travelis a female-led adventure company focused on expanding the audience for outdoor travel.

This program is specifically built for plus-size women, typically 16 and older, who want to experience the outdoors without being asked to change their body shape to meet outdated adventure norms.

Trips include activities such as hiking, kayaking, and sightseeing, and are paced to emphasize comfort over performance.

Guides are trained to accommodate the needs of a variety of bodies, and accommodations and equipment are selected with size in mind.
