Having worked as a fashion editor for the past 12 years, it’s safe to say I’m pretty discerning when it comes to wardrobe basics. With so many different options on the market these days, there’s no reason to settle for clothes or accessories you don’t love or want to wear often. On the other hand, there are also overwhelming problems. number Basic wardrobe items are commercially available, so when you find something you really like, you tend to stay true to it.
I was recently rummaging through my closet and realized that I owned more basic items in multiple colors than I expected. And they had something in common. It’s about adding an element that looks expensive to the outfit for whatever reason. To me, buying something and then going back to buy it in a different color is proof of how great it is.
So, if you want to know what kind of expensive-looking wardrobe basics our picky fashion editors are buying in multiple colors, keep scrolling to shop my staples, too.
Reset Nando T-shirt
I own more t-shirts than I’d like to admit, but the Leset Nando t-shirt is often the one that goes best with my outfit. (Like all Leset items) Very well made and fits well without being too snug. Trust me, order it. It’s a keeper.
Levi’s 501 ’90s jeans
If you’re looking for the perfect vintage-inspired straight-leg jeans without straining your clothing budget, your search ends here.
Reformation Carolina Skirt
Basics don’t have to be boring and this skirt proves that. It can be styled in many different ways and can be dressed up or down. And the fact that Reformation continues to release it in different colors proves that it’s one of their staple items.
Madewell The Easy Shirt
Year by year, my obsession with button-down shirts has become stronger, The Madewell Easy Shirt is a special item. It’s the perfect length, oversized without being too big, well made (and under $100!), and available in a variety of colors.
Comme Si The Yves socks
In my opinion, socks shouldn’t be put on the back burner. It is an important basic item that is both functional and (in a good way) the focal point of your coordination. Perfect in every way, this Comme Si style is a must-buy.
Reform Inez Pump
I think it’s debatable whether shoes can be called basic, but I think they are. of The Reformation Inez pumps became an instant hit when they were released last fall, and Ref continues to release them in additional colors and heel heights. Please believe me. These shoes are perfect for any outfit and instantly elevate any outfit. I own the Espresso Eel and the burgundy calf hair version that came out this winter, but I don’t think it will stop there.
J.Crew Cashmere High V-Neck Sweater
This is definitely my favorite cashmere sweater that I’ve purchased recently. The high V-neck is very chic and forward-looking, and the fit is perfect. I would like to have all 8 colors. This spring/summer, when it’s not sweater weather, I plan to wear it over my shoulder.
Polo Ralph Lauren Cotton Chino Baseball Cap
When it comes to accessory versions of basics, Polo A Ralph Lauren baseball cap might be the most frequently worn item in my closet. I have winter colors and summer colors as well. All colors look a little preppy and a little expensive with any outfit, in a casual and cool way that only baseball caps can.
Posse Alice linen mini dress
Last but not least is the perfect linen dress: the Posse Alice Linen Mini Dress. This square neck mini (with pockets!) is classic and timeless, yet on-trend for any year. Black and white iterations are a must, but keep an eye out for the seasonal colors that Posse tends to release.
