Finding plus size maternity swimwear can feel like an Olympic sport. Already dealing with a body that changes every week, add the challenge of finding a swimsuit that actually fits your growing bump and also comes in plus sizes? Your options quickly narrow, styles become uninteresting, and frustration quickly mounts.
But the truth is that great plus size maternity swimwear exists. In fact, some of them. Finding the right one is not just a nice-to-have, it’s worth the search. Whether you’re planning a babymoon, spending the weekend at the pool, or just want to stay cool and comfortable, you deserve a swimsuit that makes you feel like you…bumps and all.
What experts say about plus-size maternity swimwear
We are certified childbirth educators; Birth of plus sizein her opinion. Jen is one of the leading voices on plus size pregnancy and maternity clothing, and her advice is always grounded and practical.
“A supportive (and cute) swimsuit is a must when shopping for plus-size maternity clothes. Beyond the blissful moment of weightlessness, swimming and water aerobics are a great way to have fun and get active during pregnancy. So while the suit you’re wearing now may last longer than you expect, size up or invest in a maternity suit when it fits.”
That’s the perspective we’re working with. Instead of “this is how you hide your bumps”, here’s how to feel supported, comfortable, and really good in the water.

Smart tips for buying plus size maternity swimsuits
Before you shop, keep a few things in mind to save yourself time, money, and frustration.
Consider separates rather than dresses. If dedicated plus size maternity swimsuits are limited, buying tops and bottoms in different sizes separately is a really smart choice. Your bump and top may be completely different sizes, and that’s completely normal. High-rise swim bottoms with power mesh (like the Torrid option above) offer serious tummy support, even if they’re not strictly maternity.
First, buy second-hand items. Maternity clothes have the shortest wear period of almost all clothing categories. If you check Poshmark, Mercari, and ThredUp before buying something new, you can often find new or gently used plus-size maternity swimwear for a fraction of the retail price. New parents and those expecting a baby sell these products as soon as they are delivered.

Bike shorts and swim shorts are also valid options. While they won’t hold up as well to chlorine as swimsuit-specific fabrics, plus-size bike shorts (Yitty are a great starting point) will provide good tummy coverage and support in a pinch, especially if you’re on a lake day or a beach trip without swimming laps.
If you are in between, please size up. Your body changes rapidly during pregnancy. If you’re in between sizes, go for the larger size. A suit with room to grow is a much better investment than one that fits perfectly at 20 weeks but doesn’t work at 30 weeks.
Prioritize stretch and lining. Look for suits that have plenty of stretch and good lining, especially in the midsection. This is more important for comfort and fit than the specific style you choose.
