Someone said at an event recently that September is the new January, and I couldn’t agree more. Maybe it’s because of the back-to-school energy in the air, but September is full of new beginnings. Just like we change our habits for the new year (for a few weeks at least), the start of fall is the perfect time to shake up our daily routines, and my makeup routine is one of the first to be overhauled.
A summer full of bright colors, matte textures (and sweat) is over… a lot Now that I’m all sweaty, I’m itching to dive into fall’s cooler, muted hues, so I consulted celebrity makeup artists (all of whom are at the forefront of the beauty trend cycle) on the hottest makeup looks of the season. Spoiler: many of them scream “French cool girl.” Read on to find inspiration for your fall makeup mood board and all the products you need for your fall moment.
1. Burgundy lips
Burgundy this fall, fashion And in the beauty space. In terms of the latter, expect to see a lot of moody, autumnal, oxblood-hued lips. “As we’re approaching the end of the ‘clean girl’ makeup era, we’re embracing bolder looks, but still keeping them super wearable, like a bold autumnal burgundy lip paired with fresh skin,” says the celebrity makeup artist. 2. Dirty Eyes
PSA: Eye makeup will be in the spotlight for fall 2024. “I think eye makeup is finally here!” Celebrity makeup artist praises Nikki DeRoestFounder of Ciel Cosmetics“I think we’re moving away from a little bronze on the lid to more purposeful, statement eye makeup,” she says. I share her excitement. funIt’s especially effective to incorporate smoky, grungy hues, which give a lived-in yet dramatic impression.
“I love smoky winged eyeliner and lash liners,” agrees Sewell. “They work with any eye look, from day to night, and I feel like they can really bring out the color of your eyes, depending on the color you choose.”

3. Minimal blush
Beauty trends swing like a pendulum. We often move from one extreme to another, and the rise and fall of blush is certainly no different. “I think we’re losing sight of blush and moving away from the ‘sun-kissed skin’ trend, and bringing skin back to its natural, simple nature,” Sewell predicts.
I totally agree, especially since I’ve seen so many minimal blush looks this season. New York Fashion Week runwayLegendary Makeup Artist Diane Kendall She even said backstage that bold blush would be replaced with just a touch of color on the cheeks: “Just a little bit of color on the cheeks can do so much to change the whole look of your face,” she told Jason Wu.

4. Cinnamon Spice
But that doesn’t mean blush will be completely unpopular. For those who want to add some color to their cheeks, celebrity makeup artists recommend Kirin Batty She recommends choosing beautiful fall hues like “plums, reds, berries and browns,” she says.
Even better, apply these shades to your lips and eyelids for a monochromatic color story. DeRoast calls this look “Cinnamon Spice,” a perfect riff on last year’s popular “latte makeup” trend, prioritizing dark browns as well as burnt orange, maroon, and rust tones to add a touch of autumnal spice. “I love smudged eyeliner with a cream pencil or eyeshadow stick,” she says. [these] “When it comes to eye makeup, I like to go for deep colors,” says Bhatti, “anything that’s easy to apply and blend for an easy effect.”

5. Colorful eyelashes
“We’re seeing more and more tinted mascaras, like bright blues and purples, that soak into the liner and create a completely monochromatic eye look that continues right up to the mascara,” says DeRoste. On the LaQuan Smith runway, models sported cobalt blue mascara. This NYFWI want to buy the bright blue tube. 6. Blurred Lines
All three makeup artists I spoke to said they’re seeing an uptick in smudged, pushed-in lips, which means it’s already very much dominating the beauty zeitgeist. “We’re moving away from overly contoured lips, toward very soft, smudged lips,” Sewell says. “I don’t know if this is something people are relating to, but… Dissolve the filler“But I think we’re moving away from big, plump lips and embracing them through softer, more applied products.” I don’t know about you, but I’m definitely seeing blurred lips all over my Instagram and TikTok feeds. (The hashtag #blurredlips has already had 113 million views and counting!)
While blurred lips aren’t new—blurred “popsicle lips” are a staple in Korean beauty—DeRoast says they’ll play out a little differently in the U.S. beauty market. “Whereas in Asia, blurred lips are more of a red or coral trend, here, blurred lips will be dominated by darker berry, brown, and burgundy shades,” she says. (Again, burgundy is hot!) Bhatti agrees, pointing out the color talk, especially the rich berry-brown tones that are so iconic to fall. Not to mention, blurred berry lips are French.

7. Matte Moment
After years of celebrating dewy, glassy “glazed donut” skin, beauty fans are finally moving towards a matte look. Case in point? More brands are launching setting powders, and product launches tend to reflect consumer behavior. Clearly, people are craving a more matte look. “I think we’ll see powders come back as a makeup bag staple,” adds Bhatti. “It means you can balance dewy skin with a matte T-zone, which I love in the cooler months. It makes you look more put together.”
DeRoste agrees, predicting that glow will be less emphasized than in the past: “It’ll still be glowy, but it’ll be more refined and have more coverage,” she points out.
