We have officially entered the holiday season! Since you guys liked my posts about Thanksgiving Day Outfits and Fall/Winter Skirt Outfit Ideas, I thought it would be fun to discuss what to wear to celebrate the holiday. I already have several gatherings on my calendar, from casual to black tie, and I can’t wait. Today we’ll be sharing some tips and tricks on festive attire and showcasing some of the Christmas party looks we’ve been eyeing on the event calendar this season.
How to pull off a chic Christmas party look
Before I get into my current favorite styles, I’d like to share a little guidance on holiday attire. During the winter months, it can be difficult to find the balance between looking stylish and staying warm. Here are some tips and tricks to keep in mind during the holiday season.
1. Consider layering
So let’s get straight to the biggest challenge. It’s about finding clothes that keep you warm while still looking put together and feminine. What’s the key? Layer! And thankfully, there are plenty of chic layering options. Try wearing a tissue turtleneck under an open-neck or strapless dress, or style tall boots with chunky tights and tall socks. These are just two examples of the different combinations you can create.
And contrary to what you might think, Christmas party layered looks don’t have to be bulky or awkward. Here , here , here , and here are some of my favorite past examples of layering. Any of these combinations can easily add a holiday vibe.
2. Traditional…with a twist
Don’t get me wrong. I love the timeless tartan and traditional black velvet Christmas party looks. It’s truly a classic and you can’t go wrong! But don’t be afraid to put a fun twist on things. Try mixing and matching mint and red, hunter green and light blue. Another combination I love is light pink and maroon, as seen in this look. And feel like another chic holiday color doesn’t get enough love? Head-to-toe winter white moment!
3. Play with textures
One of my favorite things about fall/winter dressing is the abundance of materials you can mix and match. Velvet, tulle, faux fur, mohair, satin – the combinations are endless. In my opinion, mixing and matching materials adds depth and interest to any outfit.

Now, here’s the best part… let’s take a look at holiday attire that is suitable for all types of gatherings! It’s important to keep the type of event in mind when planning your attire to ensure you’re dressing appropriately. For this reason, I break things down into three main occasions. Cocktail parties, black tie functions, and casual holiday gatherings. Here are some festive and sophisticated outfit ideas that are perfect for all kinds of celebrations.

The RealReal is full of gems. Think about it. Most women only wear a black tie gown once or twice, right? That’s why most of the formal dresses you come across at TRR are in great condition. I think some people are hesitant to shop at TRR because they believe everything is a final sale, but that’s not true. Most items can be returned, except bags and sale items. Please review the shipping and return policies listed on each product. I also like that I can wear the item and then sell it back to TRR. You typically get back about 70% of what you paid. This feels like a very win-win. For more information, I highly recommend checking out my post on tips and tricks for shopping at The RealReal.
