Young people today are troubled by the nasty trend-sensitive aesthetics of the late 2000s and early 2010s. At the heart of this was French designer and Queen of Cool, Isabel Marin.

For a long time (2011), in the Galaxy (Paris), Kate Moss posed in an ad campaign wearing Isabel Marant’s latest work. Suede lace-up high-top sneakers with wedge heels and logo. The shoes were called “The Bekett” – named after a friend of Marant – and they were everywhere, after Moss’s approval stamp. Eva Mendes knitted them up to run from the Hollywood paparazzi.

Fourteen years later, Maran’s sneaker wedges are back. The new campaign for trainers, created in collaboration with Converse, stars Liramos’ Z, daughter of Kate and creative director Jefferson Huck. In the ad, she walks through the cobblestone streets with loose, long hair and fine denim, as her mother did more than a decade ago. “People kept asking us to get our shoes back,” Marant tells the BBC from her Paris studio. “And why? When something is well and good, it stays good forever. Kate, she will be forever.”

Lila represents the next generation, and her version of Coolness is a new take on Indie Three, a messy hipster style term from the late 2000s and early 2010s.[s] The decadence of medium aging is based on a biography of the indie three-party scene who died in 2012, and according to that biography, the account features a grainy image with holey t-shirts, ripped tights or skinny jeans, and messy hair and make-up. leatherand celebrities like British model Alexa Chong and American singer Sky Ferreira were Grimia versions with Glimmer, a sunny bohemian look embodied by Siena Miller and Stella McCartney. The original indie three-way movement replaced the lace eyelet top for faded t-shirts and traded bootcut jeans. Emerging party photographers like Mark Hunter (also known as “The Cobrasnake”) still documented scenes on Nobel’s digital cameras, while independent magazines such as Supersuper, Vice and Paper covered movements that borrowed heavily from the arch embrace of the Gen X’s gatekeeping of irony and culture.

Online debate that frequently surfaced on social media platforms MySpace asked if it was the late Amy Winehouse Really Ash from the burning cork was used as eyeliner. “A popular joke of the time: “How many hipsters do you need to screw a light bulb in? Ah, that’s really like an obscure number. You’ve probably never heard of it.”

It is worth noting that at the time, Indie Threes was not the moniker used to describe the extremely tight leather pants, studded biker jackets and the clutches of Perspex designers, created by designers such as Marant, Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld, Dior Munmu and Saint Roller’s Heady Sliman. As NYU professor and cultural critic Ruby Justice Thelot told the BBC, “Indie Sleaze didn’t exist.” Instead, it was called “hipster style” or “Tumblr style” after a popular blogging platform, or simply “club kid style.”

Trend predictor Mandy Lee popularized the term indie threes in 2022, especially among teens and young adults who were trapped in covid lockdowns during the early adolescence period, and even when they were craving high prices on the jammed dance floor.

‘Attractive but cool‘

“It seems like a very cool time to be alive,” says Chloe Plasse, a 21-year-old design student at a new school in Manhattan. “Isabel Maran’s 2010 collection is my dream wardrobe,” says Nikki Ball Kumar, 19, a university student in New York City. She saved searches on resale platforms such as eBay and Vestiaire Collective to find the biggest hits of designers. It’s black leather, and of course, the heels of the original Beckett wedge sneakers.

Today, everything is so refined that it’s fake. It’s not rock and roll. That’s not really appealing to me.

The adoration of young and party-oriented millennials and Gen X shoppers in their indie threes, as well as those who were too young to have heard wine houses sing in person in a sticky pub created a sales frenzy for Marant. “I think people are very interested in my design because I bumped into two different nostalgia,” says Maran. “You know, on the other hand, you’re nostalgic for what you lived in. For millennials it’s 2005, 2010, 2015. It’s kind of nostalgia. I didn’t do it‘t I live there. ”

Maran says young people today view the 2010s, before the age of constant digital surveillance and hairless AI filters, as the last shortness of freedom. “It’s so fake today because everything is so refined. It’s not rock and roll. It’s not too appealing to me or to me about sexy stuff – certainly not cool., “It’s not very cool.” “For young shoppers who want to walk a mile through the shoes of an indie Princess Threes, rather than a fully-maintained Netflix product, Marant’s wedge heels are a natural fit.

Shoe searches can be found on reselling sites such as Vestiaire Collective and The RealReal, but they are rare. Maran admits that she didn’t understand what Beckett sneakers would turn out, and that she didn’t produce many of them in the first place. “I used to save forever on one Comme des Garçons jacket or one Margiela Top. So people wanted to do it for my designs too. We didn’t make a lot of these sneakers. That’s not my way. [Converse] But – It’s still cool, but a little light and a little soft. But of course, she smiled and said, “You should still wear them in skinny jeans. Or skinny black leather pants, do you know? In Paris, with all the women who grew up partying with Kate Moss, we all stopped smoking. But we never stop it. It’s a cool French way forever.”
