This episode of Arts 24 features “Fall of Freedom,” a wave of performances, readings, and public art events across the country as artists across the country rally against increasing censorship and political pressure on cultural institutions. Hundreds of theaters, museums and libraries will take part on November 21 and 22 in what organizers are calling an “urgent rally for artistic freedom.” Joining us from New York are two of the movement’s central figures: Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage and visual artist Dred Scott. They discuss why they think democracy is at risk, how cultural institutions are being silenced, and why artists are uniting now. Stars participating in “Fall of Freedom” include filmmaker Michael Moore, director Ava DuVernay, musicians John Legend and Amanda Palmer, Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Jennifer Egan, and visual artist Marilyn Minter. Events include readings, public art installations, concerts, film screenings, library programs, and more, all aimed at protecting freedom of expression.
