On the theme of “a knife you know is better,” Brown said:
“Better the Knife” was the first song we recorded together and it set a benchmark for the speed at which we worked. When I wrote the demo (which is basically what you can hear on the EP), it was probably the fastest song I’d ever written. I felt like I knew exactly how it was going to sound. It was a really exciting moment and a level of hyper focus to make something. I’d never felt so strong before. The demo was written, recorded and sent to the label in less than an hour!
Thematically, there’s a lot of post-relationship feelings, going back to your old life after breaking up with someone and feeling isolated again, and also a lot of feelings about coming back from New York and feeling a bit flat and numb from the weird journey. I guess it’s like a diary of a lot of the emotions I was feeling at that particular time.
Brown recorded the EP with Sophie Ellis at Nuns House in Liverpool. “She facilitated my creative decisions and ideas with very little friction, which was really important to me,” he explained. “We worked quickly, which is how I like to work. I felt like there was so much alchemy in our spontaneity.”
“Episode 2 “The album as a whole is sorting through a lot of emotions from the past year,” Brown added. “Some of the songs are reflections on loss, in different ways that I didn’t realize until I listened back to it. At the time I thought it was hidden by a lot of subtext, but it wasn’t. But some of the other songs are more love songs. I’ve always loved how direct and charming a simple, straightforward love song can be. They’re never the most poetic or dramatic, but they’re talking about the specificity of the little things and moments that are specific to the experience of love and everything around it: a friendship, a city you live in, a city you visited for a week.”
