In the decades of the late 19th century, when it became known as the Golden Age, the US population doubled over a single generation period. The country has become one of the world’s leading producers of food, coal, oil and steel, attracting enormous amounts of foreign investment and being pushed into markets in Europe and the Far East. As the wealth of the nation expanded, two classes rose simultaneously, separated by unprecedented experiences and circumstances in American life. These disparities have sparked passionate and violent debates for questions still being asked in our own time. Does a government exist to protect private property and provide balm to the inevitable casualties of industrial system turmoil? Should the government be primarily concerned with economic growth or economic justice? The fight over these questions was fought in legislatures, courts, polling stations, workplaces and streets. The outcomes of these conflicts are uncertain and important, and are characterized by the passionate level of violence and violence that shock the consciences of many Americans today. The Golden Age presents the compelling and complex story of one of the most convulsive and transformative eras in American history.
