The ever-growing number of economic inequality, rapid technological changes, the creation of dominant companies controlled by small and medium-sized enterprise elites, the rise of politicians in the pockets of large corporation leaders, populism and nativeism. These are all hallmarks of American life in 2025. But our country has seen the plays of this film before. Golden AgeIt was run from the 1870s to the late 1890s to the late 1890s. Above is a free two-hour documentary about the golden age created by PBS. They are write:

In the decades of the late 19th century, when it became known as the Golden Age, the US population doubled over a single generation period. The country has become one of the world’s leading producers of food, coal, oil and steel, attracting enormous amounts of foreign investment and being pushed into markets in Europe and the Far East. As the wealth of the nation expanded, two classes rose simultaneously, separated by unprecedented experiences and circumstances in American life. These disparities have sparked passionate and violent debates for questions still being asked in our own time. Does a government exist to protect private property and provide balm to the inevitable casualties of industrial system turmoil? Should the government be primarily concerned with economic growth or economic justice? The fight over these questions was fought in legislatures, courts, polling stations, workplaces and streets. The outcomes of these conflicts are uncertain and important, and are characterized by the passionate level of violence and violence that shock the consciences of many Americans today. The Golden Age presents the compelling and complex story of one of the most convulsive and transformative eras in American history.

To some extent, this documentary helps you to better understand our own difficult times and perhaps feel more optimistic about where we might end. (It is worth keeping in mind that the chaos of the golden age gave way to the ultimate reforms A progressive era. ) If you’re looking at a great HBO series, The golden agethe film provides a historical background that directly adds to the show’s appreciation.
