One of England’s greatest composers, William Byrd is a fascinating and complicated figure in the history of Catholic music. The musician in Queen Elizabeth’s royal chapel, he was associated with the highest ranks of Anglican institutions while writing music for the secret Catholic masses. In the first of two episodes in Bird, singer and scholar Kelly McCarthy sets Bird in the context of musical and religious confusion in the post-reformed Britain. She discusses how he navigated his secret Catholic activities, including the British court circle and his three masses.
