“Wife, you are the object of your husband, for Christ is the head of the wife, because Christ is the head of the church, and His body, and He himself is the Savior, so that the husband is the head of the wife. The church is the object of Christ, so let the wife be all of the husband’s object.”
These words of St. Paul in Ephesian V are sources of continuous discomfort for modern Catholics, and most priests would like to avoid explaining this teaching or discussing it in full. But for faithful Catholics, treating the Bible and Church teachings as embarrassing is not an option, nor is it redefine it by turning it into oblivion. Ephesians 55 is a critical source of marriage, very badly damaged by the fall, redeemed on the cross of Christ, and supernaturalized.
In this episode, Mary Stanford explains how we can come to understand and love this teaching that repels an era of egalitarianism. She brings to the table theology of Pope St. John Paul II’s body and the ideas of Edith Stein, as well as decades of experience as a wife and mother.
