The name Garrigou-Lagrange is a side term for the difficult and strict Tomism of long-awaited days, and is said to be more related to centuries accumulated over the centuries built up by academic commentators than the original teachings of the angel doctors themselves. Only in traditionalist circles his name was still spoken with respect.
However, in recent years there has been a wider reevaluation of this French Dominican priest and theologian, as well as a new translation of his work.
Mystery Sensation: Clarity and Ambiguity in Intellectual Life It shows that Garrigou was unfairly rejected as a provider of airless theology.
Matthew K. Minard, the translator of the work, will be taking part in the podcast to discuss Fr. Réginald Garrigou-Lagrange’s legacy and some of the book’s central themes. These use the mystery from above (not only the spirit, but also the material), the importance of common sense in philosophy, the various senses we use the word “bee,” the supernaturalness of faith, and, as we know, God’s prominent attributes beyond his attributes.
Through all these topics, it becomes abundantly clear that theology continues to be itself only by preserving the distinction between nature and supernatural can.
