Today’s Catholic culture is characterized by a deeply entrenched religious apathy. Among many Catholics, it is considered offensive, or at best reckless, to say what the Church has always taught: that Jesus Christ is the only way to salvation. It is being In certain countries, bishops’ conferences have effectively established a policy of not seeking converts from other religions (or lack thereof). Catholics, ruled by fear of human respectability and compromised by their own personal sins, are increasingly finding reasons not to also proclaim the moral teachings of Christ.
Ralph Martin’s new book The Church in Crisis: A Path Forward It’s a comprehensive spiritual diagnosis of our current situation, and we’re on the show about the many factors that contribute to religious apathy. These include theological doubts about whether anyone really goes to hell (thank you, Balthazar), a therapeutic culture that has lost its sense of sin and justice, and a focus on legal analysis of sin rather than the need for change. This includes fear of respect, and human respect.
