De Maria Namkuam Satis: Mary is not enough. St. Bernard’s words are echoed by many other saints. For example, St. Anselm states that it is impossible to determine the limits of God’s grace in enhancing Mary’s humanity. St. Alphonsus said that if there is something good that can be said about Mary, consistent with the teachings of the Church and on sound theological grounds, then one should say it. However, some Catholics, not to mention Protestants, oppose this kind of Mariology. Are these simply outpourings of sentimental piety, or can they be sustained as rational approaches to theology?
