Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986) was one of the greatest sacred music composers of the 20th century. Requiem
and the motet “Ubi caritas.” His rich, tranquil choral and organ work combines a deep familiarity with Gregorian chant with an impressionist style and is imbued with a devout Catholic sensibility.
Organist and choirmaster Christopher Berry studied organ with DuruflĂ©’s widow, Marie-Madeleine DuruflĂ©. Berry joins the podcast to discuss the historical background of Maurice DuruflĂ©. From an early age, he learned the ancient chant traditions of the church, and as an adult, he practiced the sacred music teachings of Pope St. Pius X, who was a major influence on his generation. DuruflĂ© studied at the Paris Conservatory and received rigorous training in improvisation, a core skill for French organists at the time. His approach to improvising over the melodies of chants and hymns can still be heard in Catholic churches today.
