University of Dallas literature professor Gregory Roper joins us on the podcast to talk about medieval “mystery plays” (also known as “miracle plays”). In England, often grouped together as a series of plays spanning salvation history, these plays were performed by town guilds at the feast of Corpus Christi. This tradition, which grew out of the liturgy, marked a revival of theatrical performance in Europe and was an important influence on Elizabethan drama; Shakespeare referenced this tradition many times in his plays.
Partly serving a didactic purpose, the play is full of theological typology but also delightful poetry, earthy humour and a thought-provoking use of anachronisms.
