Daniel McInerney joins the podcast to talk about his novel. Kate Montclair’s Good Deathabout the modern worship of authenticity, the desire for control that leads people to euthanasia, and what it truly means to accept death.
Publisher description of the novel:
Kate Montclair is dying. She is approaching late middle age, without love, without children, and without the career of her youth. Diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor, she faces the daunting prospect of the next 14 months of suffering. Kate is desperate, not only seeking a miracle cure, but a sense that her life, and life itself, is more than a catastrophe.
When Kate sees an advertisement for a symposium on death in Washington, DC, she investigates and discovers that the monthly discussion group is being led by an old friend she hasn’t seen since her days as a teacher in Rome: the idealistic and idiosyncratic Adele Schroeder. Following Adele’s advice, Kate soon decides to break Virginia law and seek assisted suicide.
But Adele Schroeder isn’t the only person Kate reunites with at the Death Symposium. Her friend from Rome, Benedict Aquila, is also there, living in Washington DC and nursing his dying mother. And there’s a strange, psychotic street woman sitting in a corner, clutching a sheet of construction paper. Who is she? She’s Ariadne’s thread, taking Kate on a journey back to her youth, forcing her to confront her love affair with a married man and the tragedy that took his life.
