Poet, translator, and cultural critic Anthony Esolen joins the podcast to talk about his writing. In the Beginning Were the Words: An Annotated Reading of the Prologue to John.
In this long meditation, Anthony Esolen looks word-for-word at the majestic prologue to the Gospel of John, which he calls “the most influential passage in human history.” He describes not only what the Apostle John saw Jesus do and heard Jesus say, but also the entire testimony of the Bible before the time of Jesus, and the way the young church preached Jesus. By showing what John has in mind, we reveal its theological richness. A unique feature of this remarkable work is how Esolen (and with him) “hears” Hebrew/Aramaic. underlying John’s Greek (which was not his native language) echoed these languages, and what we thought could never be expressed in greater depth was at the same time a new source of poetic splendor. It exploded inside, bringing the entire panorama of the world into sharper relief. Theology of the Divine Man. Esolen has been immersed in Christian poetry and the Bible for decades and is uniquely positioned to be your guide to the amazing, life-changing “poetry” of Prologue. He says it best: “My hope is not only to make clear what John wants us to hear, but also to make clear that John is not the originator when it comes to this verse. , rather to show that he is the beloved disciple who captured the custom, ”words from the Lord himself. ” (Publisher’s explanation)
