During Holy Week in 1962, Bishop Karol Wojtyla hosted a retreat for a group of Polish artists. The text of that retreat has now been published in English by the Institute of Theology of the Body as a book with commentary. God is Beauty: A Gospel and Art Retreat.
TOB Institute Director Christopher West joins Thomas Milas to discuss this retreat and how it fits with St. John Paul II’s theology of the body. Themes include:
- god is beauty
- The Incarnation is Perfect: Beauty in the Human Body
- Artists are conduits of beauty that comes from God.
- Artists are responsible for their own talent.
- Separate male and female bodies as signs of the relationship and fruitfulness of the Trinity
- The dangers of “moral minimalism”
- The Crucifixion, where moral conscience and beauty meet
- How Wojtyla’s work builds on, rather than replaces, traditional theological symbolism
Thomas also talks about her experience going to ballet and how it challenges her to see her body in a new way.
