TC Merrill’s debut novel, minor insultis a provocative depiction of the emptiness of undergraduate life at an Ivy League university. The main character is a new student who is troubled by what others think of him intellectually, socially, and sexually, and the more he tries to make a good impression, the more he makes a fool of himself. The novel ends up being a repository of humiliation, and its final catastrophe represents the words of St. Bernard: “Humiliation is the path to humility.”
