Did you know there is a hotel in New York named after Pope Leo XIII? Leo House was established in the 1880s by papal order as a boarding house for German Catholic immigrants, and today it operates as a Catholic hotel offering charitable hospitality at discounted prices.
In this episode, we learn about the hotel’s interesting history from Michael Coneys, Chairman and President of Leo House. The story includes Pope Leo’s special consideration for the Catholic Church in Germany, which was struggling under Protestant Prussian rule. So is the Society of St. Raphael, which helped political dissidents flee Nazi Germany. It also includes a very providential visit from Mother Teresa. But it’s also a very modern story, one of many Catholic nonprofits struggling to survive the past year of lockdown.
