Above is the menu for the 1899 Thanksgiving dinner at the Plaza Hotel in New York. If you were a turkey, it was relatively easy. But what about ducks? There aren’t that many. Mallard and red duck are on the menu. There are also wood ducks, Long Island ducklings, teal and canvasback ducks. Ducks in New York was not a good place.
And oh, that price! None of the items cost more than a few dollars. But let’s take inflation into account. In 2021, one Redditor said, “I found a calculator and found that $0.30 in 1899 is equivalent to $10.00 today. Fried oyster crabs would now be $24.99, Philadelphia chicken would be $66.65. So the cheapest thing on the menu would be sweet buttermilk, $0.10, which would now be $3.33.”
