Sly Stone Dead at 82

Sly Stone, the legendary singer-songwriter and funk musician behind Sly and the Family Stone, has passed away. in StatemanT, Stone’s family said he recently handed over “after a long-term battle with COPD and other underlying health issues.” He was 82 years old.

Born in Denton, Texas, Sylvester Stewart grew up in Valleyjo, California. He began to perform with his brothers at an early age, and in 1952, his older brother Freddie and his sisters recorded the first Gospels with Loretta and Loretta.

In the late 1960s, stone formed Sly and Stoners, and developed into iconic Sly and family stones. The band featured Fred Stewart (guitar, vocals), Larry Graham Jr. (bass, vocals), Greg Ellico (drums), Jerry Martini (saxophone), Cynthia Robinson (trumpet), and Rosie Stone (piano). After signing a deal with Epic, the group released their debut album Something completely new 1967.

“Dance to the Music,” the single that became the title track for the next record, peaked at number 8. Billboard Hot 100. The band followed life In September 1968, and two months later, they landed the first No. 1 in “everyday people” that appeared in the 1969s stand!. In 1969, Family Stone performed in Woodstock and became the headline for the Harlem Culture Festival.

At the peak of the band’s popularity, Sly developed a debilitating drug addiction, and his music was thematically dark and musically slow. There’s a riotSly and the Family Stone’s Intense and Mastryful Fifth album appeared in November 1971. The group’s original lineup has released its final album. After the family stones were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, the stones were not made public for more than a decade. In 2006 he made his first performance since 1987 as part of a Grammy Awards family tribute.

In 2011, Stone released an album i’m back! Family and friends. Earlier this year, Questlove released a documentary on lighting Sly Live! (also known as the burden of black genius). In 2024, Stone published his memoirs Thank you (falettinme will become a mouse elf azin), and his band’s earliest known concert recordings are expected to be released next month. First Family: Living at Winchester Cathedral in 1967.

In their statement, Stone’s family said:

It is a deep sadness to announce the death of our beloved dad, Sly Sly Stone, and our family stone. After a long battle with COPD and other underlying health issues, Sly dies peacefully surrounded by his three children, his close friends and his extended family. We lament his absence, and carry on comfort in knowing that his extraordinary musical legacy will continue to resonate and inspire for future generations.

Sly was a monumental figure, groundbreaking innovator and a true pioneer who redefines the landscape of pop, funk and rock music. His iconic songs leave an indelible mark in the world, and his influence remains undeniable. As a testament to his enduring creative spirit, Sly recently completed the script for his life story. This is a project I want to share with the world following the memoirs released in 2024.

We are deeply grateful for the pouring of love and prayer during this difficult time. We wish for peace and harmony to all who were moved by Sly’s life and his iconic music.
