It’s only a week away from the debut of Dimension 20′s Latest Season: High Flying, Two Fist Steampunk Adventures Cloud Word Ho! In it, the brave hero travels to a fantastic world of incredible wonder and danger known as Gath in search of the missing Professor Comfrey Macleod. However, before the crew took off, they got the opportunity to chat with cast member Siobhan Thompson. That character Vanellope Chapman is a brand new challenge for veteran Comedienne.
Dan Arndt: I want to start by thinking about the world about how that happens. As Brennan says at the top of the first episode, we’re doing steampunk. What was your steampunk experience?
Sioban Thompson:I think Steampunk is a somewhat epic genre. A lot of it is kind of aesthetic overlay, but what really excites me is the old adventure, RIP ROARING Bride PrincessIndiana Jones, high seas adventures, Worldwide in 80 days Type Story, Miyazaki Story.
Dan: How did you prepare yourself for a part of this world’s story?
Shioban: I always try it when I’m doing something new genre to absorb some of the previous art that was made. After watching a lot of films and reading some, Brennan wrote us a huge lore document that made us all absorbed before we got into character creation. And one of my favorite things Dimension 20 Creating that world is a kind of two-way process. Often, Brennan comes and says this is a world, but then the world is built around it, based on what our characters are. My character came from an old family of Pirates and built a part of a world that wasn’t necessarily built unless it was my pitch.
Dan: Van was a big thing that really stands out from me because he has a really cool introduction. Where did she come from as your character?

Shioban: I really wanted to play a very capable adult this season. Even if it’s not flashy, someone who is good at his job. I think a lot of adventure stories are like very dramatic people who wield rapiers. And creating characters within that genre was fun. And it was fun to have characters at least superficially, especially based on how the other members of the crew responded to their retirement. Like an adventure, I’m done, but thank you.
Dan: The fulfillment of the characters on the tabletop is very rare.
Yes, exactly. I’m retired, thank you so much for your time.
Dan: How do you play a character who is so capable, used to it and skilled, still amazed, yet still playing that role in the story?
Shioban: They may not be surprised yet, even though competent people may have more ink than others know what will happen next. It’s about how you react and it’s fun to play someone who’s the leader like that. Those who are used to having commands are not because they are powerful, but because they are right. It’s so much fun to play characters that don’t fly in a world that’s just as crazy.
Dan: I think there are some things that are underrated about being able to play Straight Man.
Shioban: I really enjoy playing Straight Man, especially in this group. It’s not the role I play in comedy or life all the time, but it’s very fun for straight guys and still gets lots of jokes. Van performs a very kind of stupidity of a Gen X-coded gastropub. And I think that’s always a fun balance for me.

Dan: Are there any characters you really enjoyed playing with the cast?
Oh my god, I’m so funny that everyone is so good this season. Lou’s character Montgomery Lamontgomery. It’s so much fun to play someone. It’s a lot of fun for me to be able to talk about shorthand and at a shorthand level. But everyone killed it. I don’t know. I’ve always been very impressed with my friends.
