Heartrocker Director Kathryn Bigelow builds “extremely tense” in a film about nuclear missiles heading towards the US. It is a distinctively authentic “ribetting” and “cold” new drama.
The nuclear missile was launched. No one knows who launched it or if it will last longer, but one thing is clear. Unless it is stopped, the missile will destroy major US cities within 20 minutes. So, what will happen next? Most Hollywood films brought handsome heroes at this point, and he was extremely humanly talented and could certainly discover who was responsible and delivered quick retaliation, even if he couldn’t prevent a missile strike. However, the Dynamite House is overseen by Kathryn Bigelow. Katherine Bigelow has created Oscar-winning The Hurt Locker (2008) and Zero Dark Thirty (2012) and once again built her knack with ineligible tension and dedication to build deep-searched, non-nonsense military and political credibility. The resulting drama, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival on Tuesday, was released on Netflix in October and has more riveting than most thrillers, and is more frightening than most horror movies.
The House of Dynamite, the screenplay by former NBC News president Noah Oppenheim, the Dynamite home, is divided into three parts, each unfolding more or less in real time after the first preamble. The first is primarily set in the lively and caffeinated White House situation room. We process the information as if it had a senior commissioner (Rebecca Ferguson) and a senior director (Jason Clark).
This section sets the active, cold tone of the film. Bigelow and Oppenheim can’t avoid all of the old tropes of disaster movies and political thrillers. You can make a caption that gives official acronyms to each location, a heartfelt call to your estranged or pregnant loved one, but there are no epic speeches or floods of emotions. The closest thing to joke is the early use of the phrase “having a good day” when you already know that the day is not good at all.
The potential impact of the missile is to bite the nail and get closer, then the film rewinds and displays the event from a different perspective. This time, the main character is two security advisors (Gabriel Basso, Gretary), who try to provide insights to Top Brass and try to convince people to take those insights seriously. Finally, the third section covers the same minute and minute two-month timeline, as experienced by two senior politicians, the rattle-gallery Secretary of Defense (Jared Harris) and US President Jovial (Idris Elba). For a minute, the president shakes hands with a student playing basketball. He is then bundled into a car, then he is by his side with a helicopter, a nuclear “soccer” or a presidential emergency.
