RenderTattoo: How The Spanish Artist Brings A Cinematic Vision To Tattoos

Ángel Nunez Lázaro is known professionally as: rendering tattoohas carved out a unique niche in the global tattoo industry. The New York City-based Spanish artist specializes in black and gray realism and blackwork, fusing dramatic contrasts, intricate detail, and a cinematic approach to skin art. With nearly a decade of experience and a career spanning Spain, the United States, and the Netherlands, RenderTattoo’s work reflects a commitment to technical precision and emotional storytelling.

RenderTattoo’s path to tattooing is as unconventional as his art. Before inking his first work in 2016, he spent years editing photos and videos, a background that continues to shape his work. “I approach tattoos like a movie frame,” he explains. “Every element has purpose and emotional weight: light, texture, depth, composition.” This philosophy is evident in his signature style, which blends realism, storytelling, and dramatic contrast to create works that feel alive.

Clients and colleagues alike note his growing reputation for unwavering consistency, especially his extensive tattoos across his back and sleeves. His ability to maintain meticulous structural balance sets him apart in an industry where technical skill is paramount.

Although RenderTattoo has received accolades for his technical prowess, his creative identity is deeply tied to his heritage. “I don’t think my style is literally ‘Spanish,’ but my roots influence the way I perceive realism,” he says. Growing up in Almeria, Spain, he was immersed in a culture of dramatic light, historical art, and emotional intensity. Even without overt references to traditional motifs, these Mediterranean qualities – a sense of vivid contrast and drama – are present in his work.

The artist cites Korean tattoo artist Soo-mok Kim and Spanish tattoo artist Hernan Yepes as his main inspirations. Kim’s mastery of composition and detail and Yepes’ ability to build large scale tattoos with soft and bold shading have left their mark on the evolution of RenderTattoo. “They are pushing the boundaries of technical quality,” he said, adding that their work motivates him to further his own work.

His long-term goals are equally ambitious. “I aim to establish RenderTattoo as a global brand and become a leading figure in realism and large-scale tattooing,” he says. Recent invitations to serve as a judge at competitions such as San Antonio’s Villain Arts Festival, along with upcoming roles in Minneapolis and Philadelphia, underscore his growing influence.

RenderTattoo’s career trajectory has been marked by both recognition and growth. Since starting his career in Spain, he has won multiple awards, including 3rd place in the black and white tattoo category, 2nd place in the realism category, and the “Biggest Tattoo Sunday” award at the 2022 Estepona Tattoo Convention. Other honors include awards at the Granada and Almeria Tattoo Conventions, as well as awards at international exhibitions in France, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States. His work has also been featured at exhibitions in Europe and North America, reflecting his global influence.

His blackwork style is particularly notable for its innovative use of volume and dotwork, blending pepper shading and glazing techniques to create depth and structure. “I look at every tattoo as an opportunity for improvement,” he says, emphasizing his philosophy of constant evolution.

RenderTattoo emphasizes the importance of basic training for new tattoo artists. “Before following trends, master light, shadow, anatomy, and composition,” he advises. He also emphasizes the value of patience, humility, and honesty in a field increasingly shaped by social media visibility. “Discipline and practical skills are paramount,” he argues, advocating collaboration with mentors and a constant focus on personal growth.

Looking to the future, RenderTattoo continues to grow its international customer base while preparing to serve as a judge at high-profile tattoo conventions in 2026 and beyond. His work is rooted in a vision of timeless artistry. Whether through expansive, detailed backpieces or intimate blackwork designs, he aims to capture meaningful moments on the skin. He considers it both a craft and a connection between artist and client.

With an eye for cinematic composition and a dedication to excellence, RenderTattoo has not only shaped his career, but contributed to the evolving story of modern tattooing. Even as he continues to push boundaries, his influence on the industry continues to be as intentional and impressive as the tattoos he creates.
