How do I play?
This is exactly the board game version Mario KartThe game is about racing, and ultimately your goal is to win the race, but there are a few other things that will help you win besides going fast.
Each player has their own player board that shows how many movement points they have on their turn. At the start of your turn, move the stick one spot up or down to gain more movement points or lose movement points. You can then use your movement points to either move forward, change direction 60 degrees and turn, move forward without changing the direction of your car and drift sideways, or smash into another opponent in front of you.
After moving, you check the type of terrain you have passed through and begin your next turn by lowering your stick shift according to the terrain listed on the bottom layer of your player board – this means that terrain can affect your movement speed, so it’s important to pay attention to it.
You need to set a movement timeout because you can only drift and turn once per turn and you need to use all your movement points. Avoid using your movement points to crash into obstacles or walls. Why? Because if you do, you will drop your player board stick to the lowest gear and start your next turn at a slower speed.
In addition to manipulating obstacles placed on the track to put yourself in a good position, you also have driver abilities. As you drive the truck, you can pick up coins and spell books. Coins are used to activate driver abilities, and each driver has a different, unique behavior. Spell books are like hitting a question mark in Mario Kart. At the end of the round, you determine who is in the lead. Whoever has a spell book at that time can discard it and gain a card that corresponds to their current position. So if you’re in the lead, your cards will be good, but not as great as when you’re at the bottom.
These cards list when they can be triggered, allowing you to catch up if you’re falling behind – knowing this, it’s sometimes wise to go off course to collect an extra coin or spell book, then use it to reclaim your position and win the race.
There are several obstacles that can cause crashes or spinouts and slow you down. Players are encouraged to run into other players and make them crash. Among the randomly placed obstacles there are also heroes, who have cards that make it harder to avoid them. Their job is to cause more crashes and they need to plan their actions so as not to get too close to the Princess and lose the game.
As each player finishes their turn by moving the gear stick up or down, moving their driver, or possibly using an ability, a hazard with specific rules is triggered. Players are then placed on the placement track to show who is in the lead. Spell cards are won by the player with the spell book, and the first player token is passed clockwise to the next player. The next round is then played, and this continues until someone crosses the finish line. All players receive the same number of turns, and if more than one player crosses the finish line, the player with the most remaining movement points wins the game.
verdict
Dungeon Cart The closest table game I’ve seen is Mario Kart It’s more fun than any racing game I’ve ever played, and I mean that in a good way. Mario KartWhile there are strategic parts to the game, there’s also a lot of randomness, like drawing spell cards and using your driver’s abilities to make fun moves that no one else can do.
Different parts of the course have different movement points, and it takes more time to move through different types of terrain. Also, you may not be on asphalt throughout the entire game. You will have to drive through other terrain to manipulate the course and collect coins and spell books. But the way the turns and courses are set up is fun and fair for players. There are many ways to move and go in any direction you want. Turns and drifts can only be performed once per turn, so you will mostly be setting turns while moving in a straight line.
Anything can happen in this race, anyone can win in the end, and players will be thrilled when they can target other players with their special abilities: shortcuts, lightning, zombies, they’re all there in this game.
The components are great. There are lots of oversized tiles to use to make different tracks. The acrylic racers are very suitable for this game. The tokens are as expected, but the cards seem a bit thin and fragile. The inserts are nice and help store all the components without any issues. Overall, this is a great piece of work by Brotherwise and the art is in line with what you’d expect from this game and other titles by Brotherwise.
Overall it’s a fun and strategic game, but I have doubts about the heroes – they seem to be trying to make the obstacles different and change as you play, but this often fails and makes the game slower, sometimes it even has no effect at all, which makes me wonder if they are a useful addition to the gameplay.
My kids and I really enjoy playing together. Dungeon Cartand it will be one of the racing games we return to, especially when kids attack each other and then want to get revenge. This will myself I won a lot of my matches because they distracted each other and allowed me to soar over the finish line, not that I’m complaining!
